Why does my Safari only go to macsecurityalert.net?

every time I try to open my Safari window, I get the following message "http://macsecurityalert.net VIRUS FOUND. The last website you visited has infected your Mac with a virus. Click ok to begin the repair process."

is this a valid website? How do I get out of this?

That is a scam. See:

I'm sorry to bother you Thomas, but you seem to have a good understanding of this kind of stuff. I also went on a webpage where "http://macsecurityalert.net VIRUS FOUND. The last website you visited has infected your Mac with a virus. Click ok to begin the repair process." popped up and I clicked okay. Then it said "Scan Now" and not realizing that this was a scam I clicked on it and it ran a diagnosis that honestly could have been false I'm not sure. And then it somehow determined that I had a virus. The next option was I believe "solve this problem" , but I didn't click on that. Do you think by clicking "Scan Now" my computer could be compromised or infected?
