In the app store I get the following message when I click the update tab, "An error has occurred. Couldn’t communicate with a helper application". I have tried restarting normally and in safe mode with the same message.
iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

softwareupdate --install --all
which I attempted but got:

Does anyone have any ideas?
I'm seeing the same problem as well. When I open the app store as soon as it searches for available updates it sits there forever and then finally gives that message. And when I try to go to the store menu it crashes. I've restarted multiple times and it doesn't solve the issue.

Same error here... can't seem to complete the update to 10.10.4
I Don't know what happened but the next day it worked fine. Whatever was stopping me must've have finally reset and I was able to update.
Try to delete the latest software that you installed. I had the same problem and delete "Contract Killer 2" and the problem was solved.
i have the same problem, where is this file. (Contract Killer 2)
I ran "softwareupdate --install --all" and it said that no updates are available
I then went into the app store and tried to update using the button and it worked, i can now also download other apps from the App Store (which i couldn't before)
