is the apple watch a stand alone product?

Requires iPhone 5 or later.

I was also wondering if it was stand alone and you say it isn't, so just to clarify, If I purchase one I have to still carry my Iphone 6 with me or at least have it close by my person for it to work most features? such as Messages, calls, mail etc

If you want networking features you have to be in range of your iPhone. The Apple Watch is an iPhone accessory.

It can monitor physical activity, play previously sync'ed music to bluetooth headphones, etc... But it does not connect to the internet except via the iPhone.

If you are on the same WiFi subnet (such as at home), it is suppose to be able to access your iPhone and use the networking features, while the iPhone is sitting in a charger in another room.
