Most issues are caused by a lack of wifi signal, because the router is not a 802.11n or 802.11ac and because it's too far from the room you're using the Airplay feature.

my router is an apple router and no less than 5 feet away from both the computer and Apple tv. When I go into Apple TV it tells me to sign in with Apple id and never sync. Than went into the computer to do home sharing and still doesn't connect

Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
Try connecting Apple TV with ethernet to rule out wifi issues
You can see network status by getting a report with istumbler, netstumbler or similar. It will show signal strength, noise, nearby networks
