New iTunes won't upgrade, iTunes stops working altogether

Hi,

I was trying to upgrade my iPhone 5s to the last 8.1.3 version while a prompt to upgrade to the last iTunes 12.1 so I cancelled the iOS update and proceeded with the ITunes one. Left my phone hooked up.

2 hours into the upgrade the installer seemed stuck in an infinite loop, I had to kill the app using the Task Manager. Now iTunes won't work anymore at all. It won't install (rolls back at some point, slower if any Apple device is hooked, quicker if no device is present )

I tried uninstalling everything and re-installing. No success. Dove into the registry, cleaned it. No success. Renamed all usbaapl64/ netaapl64 files. No success...

Please help.

Thank you!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

ofeqve,

If the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) is installed on your system, you may need to manually start the service, then set the Service Startup type to Automatics so that the service can launch when necessary. Should you be unable to find the service in the list of services on your computer, or be unable to start the service, the article linked below also details how to go about completely removing AMDS in order to allow for a proper reinstallation.

Alternatively, the issue may be caused by existing security software (anti-virus, internet security, etc.) preventing the service from operating normally. The next article linked details a number of steps to help attempt to prevent any such conflict, and methods for isolating security software as the source of the issue, as well (starting with the "Configure your software" section).
