Kernel Panics, com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily

Hello...

Yes, there are KB articles on this topic, and much written.

Here are some symptoms:

  • My iMac Retina 27" crashes, rebooting itself, always when I am away from the machine
  • The crash reports have a few things in common:
    • Kernel Extensions in backtrace: com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily(2.0)[917971EF-5947-3DF5-BB9F-D353D05C0484]@0xffffff7 f9ee4d000->0xffffff7f9eec2fff dependency: com.apple.driver.AppleFDEKeyStore(28.30)[3BAA7FEE-7EF3-3A9A-A0B1-902A4AB7171F]@ 0xffffff7f9ee42000
    • BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Connect
    • Sometimes, there will be one or two non-Apple kexts loaded, but sometimes none.

In my web-research, there seems to be a wide variety of kernel panics, and I've been trying various approaches:

1) Make sure there are no non-Apple kexts loaded.

I'm facing two issues here:

  1. Parallels. Sometimes crashes follow using Parallels, but not immediately. And it isn't reproducible because it is sometimes. And Parallels doesn't predictably fail to unload its kexts after using it, so it remains mysterious as to why, after using Parallels and quitting Parallels, will the Crash Report show the Parallels kexts. And, simply, their support people deny that seeing their kexts in the crash reports are of any significance.
  2. RogueAmoeba. Often, after I reboot, I see com.rogueamoeba.HermesAudio in the kext list. I have been unable to get RogueAmoeba's solution as to why this old extension is loading, but if I see it running, I will kextunload it and it isn't always present in the crash logs.

2) Pay attention to the BSD process name corresponding to the current thread

This flat out doesn't help because "Connect" is such a common word and searching on the whole string "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Connect", yields no search results.

3) Pay attention to input devices, since the com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily is the kext found in the backtrace.

Input devices, like, which ones? Anything connected to the iMac? How do I narrow that down? Does that include connections via Bluetooth? The crashes are infrequent enough that I need some hypotheses to test before I disconnect things willy-nilly.

Any help?

(I'll post a crash log if that help.)

KP? I hope you mean the crash report on the Kernel Panic...

As I noted in my original post:

  • That kext is not present for every Kernel Panic, and I've had many. It is there about 1/2 of the time
  • It keeps reloading every time I reboot, and I cannot figure out how to stop that from happening
  • I have unloaded that kext (kextunload -b com.rogueamoeba.HermesAudio) after rebooting, and it will still crash within five days (those times, that kext is not present)

    QuickTimeKirk wrote:

Remove that third party software and test again.

Feb 2, 2015 5:42 PM in response to Brent D.

Go to Rogue Amoeba's web site and determine how to uninstall the program.

All that command did was unload the kext for that particular moment in time. Once you restart, the launchd plist for it reloads the kext.

Another thing to test is external devices and RAM.

Disconnect all external devices except keyboard and mouse/trackpad, test.

Remove half the RAM and test. Swap with other half. If you don't get panics with one set of RAM, keep halving the bad RAM until you identify the bad stick.

I don't think you'd get a memory leak like that with bad RAM, though.

Feb 2, 2015 6:57 PM in response to Barney-15E

I was in email conversation, dating back months, with Rogue Amoeba. They replied today when I emailed them again, giving me two locations to look for related files.

I found /System/Library/Extensions/HermesAudio.kext and /usr/local/hermes, both of which I have now removed.

Barney-15E wrote:

I am hopeful that this will eliminate the problem, but I am still suspicious of Parallels.

Feb 4, 2015 11:39 AM in response to Barney-15E

So, it has been 36 hours and so far, so good.

The main trouble is that it is hard to "test" this. The symptom, the kernel panic, happens every 2 to ~10 days. So if I were, as Barney-15E suggest, want to test without external devices, I'd have to do without a whole bunch of things for a week in order to "test", and then not be sure. It could take months to test this way, given the cycle of the symptom.

Sigh.

I'm hopeful it won't crash. But I'll come back to explain if the dated Rogue Ameoba kext was the culprit or not. In 2 to ~10 days...

Feb 13, 2015 2:34 PM in response to Brent D.

Well, I don't know if I could be more frustrated. Here, on the 11th day, it crashed. It may have even crashed twice.

No non-apple kexts are shown in the crash log. The same "com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily" and "BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Connect".

I suppose my next step is to disconnect external devices, but now I have to let my machine be without those devices for more than 10 days to see if that makes any impact.

I'm beginning to suspect that there's something in my wife's user-account that may be at play. It seems to crash more often around times she's used her account.

Sigh.

Other ideas?

Right now, the top three tasks consuming memory are:

  1. kernel_task 1.61 GB, running under root
  2. WindowServer 608.9 MB, running under _windoserver
  3. Finder 305.8 MB, running under my user

My wife just uses her login far less than I do, and the main difference is that she uses Firefox, or used to (I encouraged her to use Safari since we migrated to this iMac/Yosemite).

The trouble from the software side here is that we've had these user accounts since the advent of Fast-User-Switching on the Mac, so... since 2003. We've migrated through a variety of Operating Systems and Macs, so (as we discovered with the legacy RogueAmeoba software), there may be stray things lying around.

What step I have taken: I pulled a (new) USB 3.0 hub and the Apple Super-Drive from the back, meaning there's a bunch of things no longer connected that have been. The one thing I brought from the hub to the iMac directly is my Time Machine (Seagate) USB external drive. I figure that if I crash within 15 days, I'll need to go without the backup for a while to cross that drive off the list. (Some articles I've read have cast suspicion on Time Machine drives, but "Connect" was not the last process on those KP reports).

This is getting very troublesome to troubleshoot.

  1. It's worth betting that the RogueAmeoba kexts and whatnot were a cause (one cause) of the kernel panics
  2. It's probable that something else is another cause
  3. I'm now at one kernel panic in 20 days, far better than before, but the one kernel panic had the same descriptions.
    1. The panic was after 11 days, and it hasn't panicked in the past 9 days now (with many USB things unplugged).
    2. I will have a hard time deciding when I can start plugging some USB devices back in... 15 days? 20 days?

Sigh.

Okay. 15 days since the last panic. I've plugged back in the USB 3.0 hub, but I've unplugged everything from it except I moved the Time Machine USB drive back to it. Strangely, I just noticed that my Time Machine drive had been unmounted since the 15th, so.... well, if I get a panic in the next ten days or so, I've got a suspect.

That said, I'll be slowly plugging things back into the USB Hub if it goes more than 10 days without a panic, trying to see if I can figure out if a device is causing this!

I've seen noted that some external hard drives have caused panics. I can imagine a Hub might. It might be worthwhile to change cables if it resolves to one or the other.
