iTunes has stopped working - iTunes 12.1

I just updated iTunes 12 to 12.1 on two Windows 7 x64 systems. On both systems, iTunes fails to run now although 12.0 ran perfectly.

Upon clicking on the iTunes program icon, I get a dialog:

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application's support team for more information.

This is followed by a second Windows crash dialog on my first system:

iTunes has stopped working

None of these failures ever occurred previously with my configurations (including 12.0) with iTunes. And no, the video compatibility version (64-bit installer with 32-bit payload) doesn't fix these problems either. And I cannot find any copy of the 12.0 version to revert to!!!

Clearly this update wasn't sufficiently tested before being released. Help!!!!

Further Update!!!

Tried suggestions of totally uninstalling everything Apple from my system (including iTunes, Bonjour, etc.), eliminating any remaining registry entries, Apple directories, etc. and then rebooting followed by a full reinstall of 12.1. Nope, that didn't work.

Cleaned the system again of anything/everything Apple and reinstalled 12.0.1 (had a copy of the 64-bit installer around) and I back up and working again.

Clearly there are problems with 12.1.0.71. Hopefully Apple can put out a new update ASAP.

Yup, I have two relatively recent i5 based PC's running win7, both fully up to date with Microsoft updates, both with plenty of memory and healthy. When I updated both iTunes to 12.1.1.4, the wheels just came off. Every time I plug in my iPhone, iPod or iPad, I get the error block, "iTunes has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly.....". I'm so tired of this iTunes mess anyway. As far as I'm concerned, iTunes 10.7 was the last decent version anyway, and Apple seems driven to louse it up more and more with every new issue. But this has been written about and discussed at length by users and writers everywhere so I'll let it go, other than to say this. Some blockhead at Apple is heading the iTunes department and clearly should have been discharged years ago!

Windows 7. I have not been able to use i tunes since I updated to 11.1.111. That was in 2013. I have been trying to uninstall itunes and have simply been unable to do so.I have removed EVERY SINGLE FIBER of ANYTHING APPLE I can find, except the itunes found under control panel programs b/c System is not allowing the un-installation/removal/deletion.change/repair.
Message referred to tech support. Apple tech support referred me here. 😢 I really want itunes digital music. Any tips?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
