A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

You are right Niel, it did come with 10.6.8 (actually 10.6.3 when I look at the original disk). But I purchased Lion when it came out, and in those days you still got the disks. So when the hard disk failed I used those disks to reinstall 10.7.5. Will I still have to reinstall 10.6.8?
