I cannot send emails from Mail on my iMac using gmail. I get the following error message:
The SMTP server “relay.gradwell.net” rejected the password for user “succeed”
Neither of these have anything to do with my username or password, which I have checked are correctly entered in Accounts.

What does Mail/Window/Connection Doctor Show? If the server is red, select it and look at the Show Details box.

No nothing is in red, both gmail and btinternet accounts are correctly configured, and the BT one still works. It's just that I keep getting that error message when I try to send emails from my gmail account.
Try deleting the password in Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access. While there, Keychain Access/First Aid.
I Tried that, the first aid app found nothing wrong, and Im still getting the same error message when I try to send emails. My password doesn't seem to satisfy this strange "relay.gradwell.net" SMTP server which I've never heard of before, and I never registered as "succeed" for user on my gmail account??
Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts /Account Information. Select an account, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). From the drop down menu select Edit SMPT server list. Then set up a server for each mail account so that is associated with the e-mail address. Delete any you don't recognize. Then go to each account and set that server as the Outgoing Mail Server (SMPT). You can click Use only this server if desired.
Yes - this seems to have worked. I couldn't find any unrecognisable accounts, but I simply deleted my gmail account information and put it in again. I did get the same strange error message, but just cancelled that and now I'm able to send gmails from Mail on my iMac. Many thanks
