I have installed JAVA 8 update 31 several times and the Apple website (that Kurt provided the link to) says it contains JAVA SE 6, but it must not because every time I boot my computer, I still get the error message that I need to install SE6 in order to open my legacy Illustrator CS5 files. Really need these files. Please advise. Thank you.

The link in my earlier post is the installer for Apple's Java 6 SE, which is the last version of Java Apple directly provided. All future versions are from Oracle, which you have already installed in the form of Java 8. Both versions can be on your Mac at the same time.

If it's not working, something else is wrong. Have you tried reinstalling the Adobe software?

Thanks for responding. Getting ready to try the empty folders.

The last time I tried installed 8.31, I made absolutely sure that my anti virus software was off and even turned off my firewall. Then, when it checked (both in Safari and Firefox) to be sure it was installed, it came back "yes". But still no luck with Illustrator, so I rebooted and got the same annoying message. Will let you know if this helps. I appreciate your help.

Thank you! I decided to uninstall all Java software and start by just installing SE6 and now Illustrator is working! The big question is, do I need JAVA 8.31? I am afraid that if I reinstall it, I will have the same problem, but maybe it was just the order of doing things that made Illustrator stop working?

Need to do some work with Illustrator before I try that just in case it doesn't work. Thanks again for your help! You saved me.

I was able to resolve my problem by uninstalling all JAVA software and installing SE6 alone, so I didn't try your method, but I am keeping the information just in case I have this problem again and can't fix it. I haven't tried reinstalling 8.31 yet, so I might need your method when I do that. Thanks so much for your help!

My understanding is if you go from Mavericks to Yosemite with CS6 on the machine you may need to completely reinstall CS6 and you will be prompted to download Java when you launch one of the apps (e.g. Photoshop)

If you have clean install (not an upgrade) of Yosemite 10.10 you will just be prompted to download Java when you launch Photoshop,

Apple might have changed Java being part of the OS with 10.10.1 but I had CS6 without hiccups of the box when I did a clean install of Yosemite.

I'm not sure why removing Java 8 would make a difference in how Illustrator suddenly started working (Java 6 is very difficult to uninstall).

But no, you don't necessarily need Java 8. I have both 6 and 8 on my Yosemite system. X-Rite's ColorPort app requires 6. Two different Java apps I use to upload client images for prints require 8.

Not sure that I understand any of this, but I can tell you that when I uninstalled JAVA 8 and reinstalled JAVA 6 SE, Illustrator CS6 started working again, and I had no further problems.

I have had no problems at all with Photoshop CS6, but CS5 stopped working, and kept giving me messages about "updating plugins". Updated everything that I could and it started working again, but I can't open InDesign CS6 documents with CS5 unless they are saved specifically for that purpose. I don't think that had anything to do with Yosemite - just an Adobe issue.

Thanks again for your help.

It depends on your service. If for example you use mpix.com, snapfish.com and other such consumer level sites to get prints made, they have a way to do that through your web browser. But for a business, mpixpro.com, whcc.com and bayphoto.com all have their own versions of what is called ROES software. They're all based on the same Java app and each company modifies it for the products they sell. Otherwise, you're unlikely to ever need Java 8 installed to upload your images.
