I'm in IMMEDIATE NEED of Ram

This is my first post here, and I signed up just so I can get some real world answers from fellow Mac Pro 1,1 Owners....here goes;

Today in 2015, do you still recommend Komputerbay or Nemix as I've seen you suggest in older posts?

I'm in a REALLY BAD situation, I'm in the middle of completing a project, and the Memory crapped out on me this weekend. I was already considering upgrading to a Mac Pro 2009 for the hardware benefits, but now I'm in IMMEDIATE NEED of Ram, and need to complete this project before I can even think about upgrading to a Mac Pro 2009.

Having said that, OWC's 16GB is $265.00 http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/53FB4MPK16GB/ and NEMIX 16GB on Amazon is $99 http://www.amazon.com/8X2GB-NEMIX-Certified-Memory-667MHz/dp/B0085MH1AW/ref=sr_1 _10?ie=UTF8&qid=1422849560&sr=8-10&keywords=nemix+16gb

To stir the pot even further, this morning I searched eBay and came across a used set of Samsung 16GB for $78.00

http://www.ebay.com/itm/16GB-4x4GB-PC2-5300F-ECC-FB-DIMM-Memory-Apple-Mac-Pro-20 06-1-1-2007-2-1-Samsun-/371236253038?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item566f67ad6e#r pdCntId as well as a used set of Crucial 16GB for $79.80 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Crucial-16GB-4x4GB-PC2-5300F-ECC-FBDIMM-Apple-Mac-Pro-20 06-1-1-2007-2-1-Memory-/351282005551

I would consider new memory from Crucial, but their website doesn't show anything new at all for the Mac Pro, it seems as if they no longer make memory for the Mac Pro 1,1 2006-2007.

It was that Samsung find on eBay that brought me to this post, after doing a Google search on the type of Ram. This is where Hatter said..."Apple OEM FBDIMMs would expect to show trouble at 3 yrs of age" Speaking about original, I've had my Mac Pro 1,1 for 3 years, and I bought it from the original owner who upgraded the Ram to 8GB...I'm now down to 2GB, and my Audio Software won't even load.

I'm in DESPERATE NEED of RAM, and if I could save more than a few bucks, then I will...If I have to spend $265 at OWC, I'll do it, but I won't be a happy camper because I'd rather put that extra money into an SSD that's in the very near future for me. I NEED to make a purchase today, so I can get back on the project by the end of the week.

Thank you for your time in reading this, and thank you in advance for your forthcoming advice/suggestions.

All The Best!!!

Thanks for that link, I'll check it out. However, I did come across one Seller that specified that he did flash the system. That particular Mac Pro IS NOT one of them that I'm "Watching". I'm looking at a couple from folks who seem to be genuine in their description, and intentions. 100% Feedback helps a lot, my current 1,1 was purchased from eBay as well from an HONEST Seller. Description and pictures were spot on when I received it...EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED.

Of the ones that I'm looking at, there's a nice one that just came off lease, a company that moved to Windows Environment, and another one from an Original Owner with 100% Feedback. Typically folks with 100% wouldn't do anything shady to ruin their online reputation...I'm one of them on eBay with 100% Feedback Since 2001, so I know a little about that.

Macs on eBay that are "take out of the box and go" typically go for more money by the time the auction process is complete. If they are also in good cosmetic condition, that is a plus -- but only if they are "ready to unpack and use immediately".

"Slightly distressed" ones sell for FAR less, because most Users can not or do not want to fix them up. [But YOU seem perfectly capable of fixing these up.]

Dents and dings are not the issue -- graphics card not working, does not pass diagnostic, unexpected restarts --not reliable, no Hard Drive included, no memory included -- those are the issues users do not feel comfortable about fixing, so will reduce the buyers pool and ultimately the selling price (even if they are cosmetically perfect).

Thanks Grant, even-though I can fix up a Mac, I'd rather get one that's already good to go at this time. After more research, I'm more leaning towards a Mac Pro 2010 instead of the Mac Pro 2009.

Once I get the NEMIX memory this week for the Mac Pro 1,1, I can proceed with the completion of the project. Once that's completed, then I can sell my Mac Pro 1,1, and get a Mac Pro 5,1 as I move forward.

A 2012 Mac Mini or an iMac is still tempting, but then I'm limited on expansion slots.

Regards

Amen to that Hatter...that's definitely the idea. My frustration from the failed memory this weekend is what prompted all of this research for upgrades. In hindsight, and in a strange way, I'm very happy that it happened. I would've probably taken the slow boat to upgrading to a Mac Pro 5,1.

This last round of researching has tipped me over to the Point Of No Return...I'll be making a Mac Pro 5,1 purchase hopefully by Sunday. There's several auctions that are ending on Sunday...the one that have a "Buy It Now" price aren't moving, but I'm staying on top of it all.

Are you speaking from 1st hand experience? Do you also have a 5,1 as well as the 1,1?

Feb 4, 2015 1:41 PM in response to 13th Crowned

I have a Mac Pro 1,1. Over the years I had upgraded it with RAM from several different vendors as I could afford to.

A few months ago I maxed it out with 32GB of Nemix RAM. Hadn't used them before, but up to now the RAM is working just great, no crashes or other RAM-related errors.

Regarding SSDs, if the Mac is ever going to run OS X later than Mavericks I would not put a Samsung EVO SSD in it because the EVO appears to run best with TRIM enabled, but Yosemite does not support TRIM for third party SSDs without a little hackery that could make the Mac unbootable under certain circumstances. My next SSDs will come from brands that have sufficient garbage collection without TRIM, like OWC.

Thanks for chiming in Network 23...at the moment, I intend to run Mountain Lion with Pro Tools 11 until Avid fixes some issues with Yosemite. I have no problems running it with Mountain Lion, I'm in no rush at all for Mavericks...or even Yosemite as far as Pro Tools is concerned. Pro Tools 11 works like a champ on Mountain Lion. Sometime this year, Avid will release a Pro Tools 12, I'll take stock again at that time and see what's best for me.

Thanks

NEMIX is the best I have used. And my temps have stayed @ 59*C for two years.

I was afraid at first due to the prices but I (and others) have used them w/o trouble.

Based on what you've said here, I decided recently to give some Nemix RAM a try in my 1,1 Mac Pro. It's early yet, but they certainly show up correctly. So I'm going to add a couple more. I'd never have looked for RAM on Amazon.

I also added some Crucial RAM to my MBP. So far, so good…

Encouraging. As we come up on 8 years on the Mac Pro1.1 I've been looking for alternatives too aside from purchasing a brand new mac. Very tempted to be honest.

LA Computers which is 5 minutes from my house by car got themselves ready for this and purchased and refurbished, not sure that the word they are using, Mac Pros before the cylinder redesigned fitting them with Yosemite and Maverick for purchases. Their Mac Pros 1.1 Start a lot less than a $1,000 and go up from there. They might be my choice if I decide to stay with the tower.

I am encouraged my Nemix memory and will consider purchasing them for my Mac Pro 1.1. I've replaced the original RAM, video graphics card, and original stock hard drive, and use 128Gb SSD from Crucial, and Superdrive no longer reading DVDs reliably in the 8 years I've owned this sweet machine. I think it will see another year before I will have to upgrade.

I have no regrets about keeping my Mac Pro 1,1 and upgrading the core components, even though I know a recent Mac mini is probably faster in many ways. I have managed to install Mavericks (unsupported) on my Mac Pro 1,1 and I think it is going to easily make it to 10 years of service with no problem, still running current applications surprisingly well. They may say PCs are cheaper, but this reliable Mac tower may end up being the cheapest computer I ever own when the cost is spread over 10 years.

Feb 5, 2015 6:28 AM in response to Robert Pena

Thanks Grant, I did not know that about Mavericks no longer being available for sale.

To Robert Pena & Network 23, I wish I could justify keeping my Mac Pro 1,1 but I can no longer keep it for my needs. If you've followed the thread from the beginning, you'll see why. In the past, I've researched upgrades before, but not to a place where I've reached the Point Of No Return of where I'm at right now. Bottom line for me is the 32 Bit EFI, and Pro Tools which I use DAILY, and NEED. I'm not interested in "risking" my workflow for a "Hack" as I've read about others doing. I can't afford to be down and unproductive because of a "possible" failed attempt to bring my Mac Pro 1,1 up to snuff. Apparently, the "hack" has worked for some folks, but it didn't go so smoothly for others either for whatever reason

If I was a Photographer/Graphic/Web Designer/Videographer etc, I would definitely keep my 1,1 and continue using it. Adobe CS5, Final Cut, Logic, etc works just fine on the Mac Pro 1,1, but Pro Tools is my weapon of choice, and the 1,1 is no longer cutting it. Having said that, the latest and current Pro Tools 11 has made some great advancement as a 64-Bit application which leaves the Mac Pro 1,1 out of the equation. I'm currently running Pro Tools 8 on my Mac Pro 1,1 and it's VERY STABLE. Out of necessity, if I need to use Pro Tools 11, I have to do so on my portable rig with my Macbook Pro, but the magic happens on my Mac Pro 1,1...that's where the Mac Pro 5,1 will come in to the picture and save the day by allowing me to use the upgraded Pro Tools 11, and the soon to be released Pro Tools 12.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm at the Point Of No Return...I gotta get me a Mac Pro 5,1 as I move forward. I'll just sell the Mac Pro 1,1 for a few hundred bucks to soften the blow of the upgrades that I'll put in to the 5,1. I don't have the room to just keep the 1,1 hanging around either, so off it goes at the end of the month.

A buddy of mine is trying to convince me that the 2012 Mac Mini Quad i7 is a really good contender for what I need moving forward, but I don't see it that way. Without a doubt, it is definitely a very powerful Mini, much more than our current Mac Pro 1,1, but I've gotten spoiled with the 4 Slots for hard drives, and the expansion slots. He had me there for a minute, but I quickly came to my senses to keep my eyes on the prize of the Mac Pro 5,1 as I move forward. Maybe later on I might pick one up, but not for what I need to move forward TODAY. It's not bad at all, just not for me right now.
