I just took my tc out of the box and desire to connect it to my fios wireless network. I have read many of the posts, but need a step by step (after unboxing the tc) of how to accomplish this. thanks all!

I just purchased my first TC. I want to add it to my fios wireless network. I have read many of the posts, and while i understand the "intent" and concept, what would help me is a step by step from the starting up the TC to adding it to my wireless network.

Thanks all for your assistance.

The Setup Guide that came with your Time Capsule covers this pretty well......but.....here you go.

Keep the Time Capsule and Fios router separated by 6-8 feet, or a few meters to minimize the chances of wireless interference effects that might occur between them.

Connect an Ethernet cable, which must remain permanently connected at all times, between one of the LAN <--> ports on the Fios router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.

Power up the Time Capsule for a minute or two.

Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen and look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station. Just below that, click on Time Capsule. The example below shows an AirPort Extreme, you will see Time Capsule on your screen.

Or, if you are using iPhone or iPad for the setup.......On the Home Screen, tap on Settings, then tap on WiFi. Look for the listing of Setup a New Base Station and just below that, tap on Time Capsule

That will start up the setup "wizard", which will take a minute to analyze the network, then show a screen like this. except that you will see an icon of the Time Capsule:

User uploaded file

Network Name.......Enter a short, simple name that you want to call the wireless network. Mine is TWNDB, for example.

Base Station..........Enter a short, simple name that you want to call the Time Capsule. Mine is TC, for example

Password...............Enter a password that will be used for both the wireless network and device password

Verify......................Verify the password

Click Next

The wizard will set up everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.

Now you should be able to choose the name of the wireless network that you specified and enter the password to connect. You can also connect your Mac directly to one of the LAN <--> ports on the Time Capsule if you want to establish a wired connection.

When Time Machine is backing up, the Time Machine "clock" icon at the top of the Mac's screen will change appearance. Instead of one small error, you will see two arrows on the icon.

When the backup is complete, the icon will change back to one arrow on the clock.

You can also click on the Time Machine clock icon, then click Time Machine Preferences to watch the progress of a backup.

Time Machine is a real mess since Yosemite was introduced. About all that you can do is.....

Open Time Machine Preferences

Click on Add or Remove Disk

Select the current backup Disk

Click to Remove the Disk

Close Time Machine

Restart the Mac

Open Time Machine Preferences

Click Add or Remove Disk

Select the Time Capsule as the Backup Disk

Click Use Disk

Close Time Machine

Wait a few minutes and try another backup. If this works, you will see "Preparing" for a long time. Let it run.

If it doesn't, start a new post with a new subject title so the Time Machine gurus will see it.

Are you running Yosemite?

If so you have left the neat world of Bob's excellent setup instructions.. and entered my world of dark dingy caves of the hacker troglodytes.

Sadly Apple believe their propaganda.. you know.. set and forget. With Yosemite is more set and reset.. reset .. kick and shove.. cry some.. shout and scream a bit.. then start resorting to hacks or going backwards.. ie Snow Leopard works fine.. Lion mostly and going downhill from there to Mountain Lion and Mavericks.. but the worst is Yosemite. The network doesn't work.. the DNS responder doesn't work .. still after two patches.

So I recommend you connect again to TC via the airport utility (if it is still working).

Change all names to short, no spaces and pure alphanumerics.. 2-20 characters. Passwords the same.. but 8-20 characters.

Do not use Apple recommended names.

Mount the TC by IP address in Finder.. use

Go, Connect to server.

Type in SMB://10.0.1.1 (replace with actual IP)

Supply the password for disk access when requested.. and most important. save in the keychain.

Can you now open the data folder in the TC in finder and copy a file to it??

If so try again with Time Machine.. don't wait too long as it will still disappear after a short period of time.
