OS X 10.10.2 update hangs on reboot and fails to install

I'm having trouble upgrading to OS X 10.10.2

When attempting to update to OS X 10.10.2 the mac restarts and the update progress bar appears but never progresses more than a fraction.. I'm forced to restart to take the mac back to login screen. Afterwards I can continue working as normal.

I attempted this upgrade a few times now, one time leaving the mac overnight and it did not progress at all.

Obviously some part of the install process is failing, can't see evidence of this being a wide-spread problem so I thought to post to this forum. I'm a fairly standard user with a range of everyday apps installed. No special partitions, the most 'OS intrusive' software that I'm using is Google drive (unless you count Ms Office in which case you would be also giving away your age).

I would appreciate any help or guidance.

You need to use the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 Combo Update. Is that what you are using? Before installing:

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion or Lion

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

I have the same issue with 10.10.1 and fixed that by repairing the disk permissions and using the combo updater.

However now I have the same issue with the 10.10.2 update and repairing the disk permissions did not work - neither did enabling memory compression again.

Any other ideas to what could fix it?

(Besides Apple releasing updates that actually work?)
