Incorrect Photo Storage Size

I recently got the iCloud storage almost full message (only use iCloud for phone backups). So I took a look at my usage setting and I see that it says I have 2+ GBs of photos on my phone. However my phone has 0 photos...I automatically upload any photos to a cloud service and delete them from my phone. I double checked and emptied the Recently Deleted album. Currently my phone has absolutely 0 pictures saved on it and yet still taking up 2+ GB...

First have you checked the Recently Deleted album in Photos?

If it's empty you have run into a strange bug, where deleted photos don't actually get removed.

To check for this follow these rather strange instructions:

  • Go to Settings/General/Date & Time
  • Disable Set Automatically
  • Tap on the current date/time and roll it back about 2 years
  • Tap <General in the upper left
  • Launch the Photos app and go to the Recently Deleted album (even if it says there are 0 photos)
  • Is it full of photos? If so, delete them
  • Go back to Settings/General/Date & Time and turn Set Automatically back on

I hope this works for you
