iPhone configuration utility wont run anymore

I get the same error(s) in my log:

[2015-02-10 12:43:46.1048 iPCU] Error: Could not get InstallDir key from 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Inc.\Apple Mobile Device Support'

[2015-02-10 12:43:49.9609 iPCU] Error: Exception from OnStartupInitial: The specified module could not be found. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007E)

While attempting to start IPCU, I see the very common dialog error "iPhone Configuration Utility failed to locate 'Apple Mobile Device Support," but trying some of the .dll copying/replacing techniques seen in other threads doesn't fix it.

I believe there is something about the Log statements that will lead to the root cause, as it seems completely different than the other threads with similar errors. I'll report back if I figure it out. Good luck.

I think I've fixed the Problem!

You have to use this Version of iTunes "iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)"

It worked for me

1. I uninstalled "Apple Mobile Device Support" (included in the "regular" ITune 12.1
2. I uninstalled "iTune" Version 12.1
3. Installed "iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)"

I checked this procedure, today, on another PC - it worked there as well!

So "iPhone Configuration Utility" (IPCU) is now working again! As far as I can see the problem seems to be related to "Apple Mobile Device Support", distributed with the current iTunes version.

No need to install "iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)". Just open regedit and copy keys "InstallDir" and "Version" from "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Apple Inc.\Apple Mobile Device Support" to "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Apple Inc.\Apple Mobile Device Support", then fix "InstallDir" value to "Program Files (x86)".

Very easy fix when you know how!! I now have the iphone configuration utility running with itunes 12.3 installed.

This registry edit saved me loads of time 🙂

Cheers abramoff, Just had to install the profile we use on new iPhones and the IPCU wouldn't run on Windows 10. This fixed it up nicely.
