Whenever I put it to sleep, the screen goes dark, but the fans keep going and I can hear the computer trying to snooze but not managing to.

Next, not the time you tried to put it to sleep. Then open the Console app that is in the Utilities folder and look for log entries at the time of the attempted sleep. post suspicious ones here

I followed the instructions on the Apple Support document you sent to me: reverting the energy display settings to default; quitting applications and then attempting to take it to sleep mode, etc, but to no avail. The latest entries from the Console's system log are as follows:

First generation Mac Pro running Lion. Can't completely go to sleep. Any ideas?
