will apple external superdrive work on a 2010 imac?

I need to replace my dvd drive and would like to use an external instead. Does the Apple USB superdrive work on a 2010 imac?

No. They only work on Macs that do not have an internal optical drive. You may be able to get it to work with a third-party hack: Use the Apple external SuperDrive on (almost) any Mac - Mac OS X Hints.

Thanks I was afraid of that. I don't really want to replace the internal drive though.

Why don't you just pickup any external USB-based optical drive? Almost any should work, and most are cheaper than Apple's. You might check out OWC for one your can use.
