Q: Can't install iTunes 12.1 on Windows 7 64-bit.

This seems to happen with every fifth or sixth iTunes update, and iTunes is incapacitated until the following update.  In this case, the error message is as follows:

An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft VC80.CRT .type="win32" .version = "8.0.50727.6195"  HRESULT: 0x80070091

    turingtest2,

Thank you very much for this and your earlier reply.

Ironically, that solved the problem which I had identified but in turn either created or revealed a new problem.  The original problem was my inability to install the 64-bit version of  Apple application support.    With this fix, that module installed properly.  Unfortunately,  a subsequent module, the Apple Mobile Device Support module did not install.  It started to install and then rolled back the installation giving only the following message:

    Clipboard Image.jpg

There was no separate error message as with the earlier issue.

    Any thoughts on this one?

    Thanks again.

Did you do a complete tear down of the existing install before you started? If not then repairing or removing the current copy of the component should allow the next one to install. If that doesn't work go to the top of the thread - Can't install iTunes 12.1 on Windows 7 64-bit. - and scroll down to the steps for logging the install of each component. Any clues from the logs?

    tt2,

The only thing that  stuck out as indicating a problem within the log text was as follows (although I could not discern the significance of many entries):

    MSI (c) (CC:A8) [17:24:51:382]: Doing action: SetupCompleteError

    Action 17:24:51: SetupCompleteError.

    Action start 17:24:51: SetupCompleteError.

DEBUG: Error 2836:  The control Back on the dialog SetupCompleteError can not take focus

The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2836. The arguments are: SetupCompleteError, Back,

    Action 17:24:51: SetupCompleteError. Dialog created

Action ended 17:25:57: SetupCompleteError. Return value 2.

Action ended 17:25:57: INSTALL. Return value 3.

This  also appears at the end of the log text:

    === Logging stopped: 9/25/2015  17:25:57 ===
    MSI (c) (CC:A8) [17:25:57:399]: Note: 1: 1708

MSI (c) (CC:A8) [17:25:57:399]: Windows Installer installed the product. Product Name: Apple Mobile Device Support. Product Version: 9.0.0.26. Product Language: 1033. Manufacturer: Apple Inc.. Installation success or error status: 1603.

    MSI (c) (CC:A8) [17:25:57:399]: Grabbed execution mutex.
MSI (c) (CC:A8) [17:25:57:399]: Cleaning up uninstalled install packages, if any exist

    === Verbose logging stopped: 9/25/2015  17:25:57 ===

Does any of that help to provide an answer to the question?   should I send the entire log text?

    and, again, thanks.

    Unable to replace driver files?

I would try to delete the current driver. See iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows, scroll down to section Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed to see how to locate the component Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. I just had to connect one of my devices before this was listed. Once you can see it right-click and click Uninstall.

Use WinLogoKey+R to open a run dialog, type in Services.msc and press enter. Look for Apple Mobile Device, stop the service if it is running.

    Delete the folders:

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support  and/or

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support

    Try installing AMDS again.

    tt2,

Thanks again for all your help.    Ultimately, the selection of error messages from the log file which you posted and the possible meanings led me to the conclusion that my Windows 10 installation (which was supposedly a clean installation) was corrupted in some manner since many of the error message is shown were inapplicable.  For example,  there was no Apple mobile device driver or service  installed and never had been (except under my previous Windows installation).

Accordingly, I ended up going through  another reset/clean reinstall of Windows 10.  This time around it worked, though I still had to  install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC Security Update  before the 64-bit Apple application support would install.

I do very much appreciate all of the time and effort you spend on this.
