Feb 4, 2015 2:15 AM in response to lampmailby R C-R,Are you trying to restore your ATV 3 to factory settings or update its software to version 7.0.3? Restoring it to the factory settings will wipe out all your customized settings, which I'm guessing is not what you want.
If you just want to update the software, on the ATV use Settings > General > Software Updates > Update Software.
When I did this, the first attempt failed with a message that I think meant the download of the new software stalled out. But I tried again a few minutes later & the software did download & install successfully, although the progress bar time remaining message during the download fluctuated wildly, going from "3 minutes remaining" back to "4 minutes" so often that I thought it would never complete.
It seems for this update, patience & perseverance are required.

If your Apple TV fails to restore through iTunes……..
- Check that you have correctly followed the instructions for your model of Apple TV.
- If not already, try using a powered USB port.
- Repeat the process but this time try connecting the cable while iTunes is closed.
- Repeat the process with another cable.
- Try restoring the Apple TV on another computer in another location.
