Menu Flashing in 10.6.8: Font issues? Restore from Time machine?

One of our designers was having problem with fonts in chrome, ended up cleaning up a font conflict in Font Explorer and somehow must have removed a system font. Now all fonts in menu etc appear as boxes, and to make matters worse, now the menu is blinking which prevents him from doing anything to correct the situation. He tried to use time machine to revert to an earlier version but it wouldn't allow him to.

Any ideas?

We tried booting from generic snow leopard disc but it wouldn't work

Can't find the disc it came with.

Some 27" iMacs shipped with a newer version of Snow Leopard than is available on a retail disc, so they only boot to the installer disc that came with them.

I don't think the newer versions would have installed different System fonts, though, so it would probably work to use Pacifist to install the System fonts from the retail installer.
