Q: iMac, Bootcamp, Windows 8.1, Fusion Drive - not working

Hey there,

as many other here I habe problems installing Windows 8.1 on my iMac (late 2013) with a 3TB Fusion Drive.

I'm playing around with that installation about 3 days or so.

Even got a problem where I couldn't delete  partition and suddenly got a second logical volume group

Somehow I could fix that.

I tried to install it with the help of Threads which are already opened here but had no success.

I just want a plain Windows version, not on that SSD part of my Fusion Drive, just about 500GB of Windows

And maybe there is a chance without reinstalling Yosemite?

Hopefully you can help me through that process.

And many thanks in advance, here is the output of my disk:

Be careful with screen shots from Console. They can reveal quite a bit of personal information. The logs seem to have rolled over. If you can, delete the BC partition using BCA (nothing else), run it again, and then look for messages on the Console. It is a bit more work, but may help figure out what the problem might be.

OK, I'll keep it in mind.

Should I delete those logs? They don't seem to show something personal

OK I will delete it via BCA and create a new one.

But I'm not at home this weekend be back on Sunday and try it then.

Thanks for your help so far

I did not see much either, and you may be out of the Edit time limit. Sorry to ask you to do extra work. Do it when you can!

    Hey,

I'm back and YOU don't have to be sorry

    I'm grateful for every help.

The first Screenshot was made AFTER DELETION of the BootCamp Partition via BCA:

On the first screen, it seems to have worked as intended. The block size of 73225904 is roughly 36GB. Was that the size of BC partition which was deleted?

On the second screen, It picks the 3 TB (3114 GB) disk.

    1. What is /Volumes/"OHNE TITEL"/Win51? I understand it has the translated (German) word for "Untitled".

    2. The size is 73225904 blocks (380232752 - 307006848) which matches what you deleted. You may want to make the Windows partition about 100GB otherwise you may run into installation issues later.

    3. The HFS volume is shrunk, the CS volume is resizeVolume(d), the underlying physical disk is resizePhysicalVolume(d). This steps should create a partition on the HDD which is within the first 2TB, but that step never seems to even start. This is where the newly created free space is formatted as FAT and a MBR is created matching the layout.

The following command is undocumented, but is what BCA is supposed to use.

    diskutil cs resizestack

    Usage:  diskutil coreStorage resizeStack

            lvUUID|MountPoint|DiskIdentifier|DeviceNode [pvUUID] size

            [part1Format part1Name part1Size part2Format part2Name part2Size

             part3Format part3Name part3Size ...]

Resize both a logical volume and one of its underlying physical volumes in a

single operation. A single physical volume is always chosen for the underlying

shrink or grow, even if the logical volume's logical volume group is backed by

more than one physical volume. If you do not specify a particular physical

volume, then one is chosen for you. Note that if this is a grow operation,

this verb is limited by the physical volume's partition's room to grow.

Specifying zero as the size asks for an "automatic" grow-to-fill operation.

If this is a shrink operation, you can optionally request that new partitions

be created in the newly-formed free space gap in the partition map.

Again, note that this only resizes one of the underlying physical volumes; if

you need more sophistication in managing your topology, you should use the

separate physical and logical volume resize verbs.

    Example: diskutil coreStorage resizeStack

             11111111-2222-3333-4444-555555555555 10g JHFS+ New 1g

There is a thread Partition BootCap on DD 3To Fusion Drive: A methode which you may also want to look at.

Can you post the current state of the two disks (after BCA completed)? It may rollback from a failure, but it is worth checking.

How to find out the state of the disks? Via diskutil list /dev/disk1?

Yes Untitled is correct, sorry this was my USB Stick.

But the Partition I deleted/created was about 600GB.

This is still beyond the 2TB limit, but does the Windows Installer continue and let you choose this partition?

Make sure you scroll down in the partition list to see everything. In the 3TB Fusion case, Macs with Fusion drive: How to find BOOTCAMP partition in Windows installer - Apple Support should help.

    From https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2

    BCA-Bootcamp-Partition.png

If it created the partition beyond 2TB, it may use EFI boot (instead of Hybrid MBR) and let you install Windows.

    Hey,

    problem still there.

I see the partition, then I need to format it, which works, but when I press OK it says that no partition could be created or partition not found

I use EFI boot from Windows DVD.

    1. Run BCA and delete the partition.

    2. Run Disk Utility and create a Free Space partition anywhere on the HDD. This may or may not work.

    3. Boot from EFI DVD and point to this partition. EFI has not restrictions with the 2TB MBR limit.

    4. This Free Space will get split by the EFI installer into an MSR and MS Data partitions. Please see Boot Camp: Partition alert message when using Boot Camp Assistant - Apple Support as well.

Were you able to manually partition using Disk Utility? What happened to cause problems with step 2. Another option is to take Time Machine Backup, and erase/restore and try BCA again.

When I make a partition manually I get the same problem as I wrote above in Windows Installer, moreover I couldn't erase the partition in Disk Utility anymore suddenly I got two logical volume groups.

    Hey Loner,

    I don't know what happened.

But now it WORKED, after so long

I don't know if it was because I only choose 32GB of size for the partition or because I downloaded an updated ISO from Microsoft of Windows 8.1.

    Anyway, thanks for your help.
