Buying a second-hand iPhone

What should a person look out for to make sure that it doesn't turn into a brick after it's first update ?

I have seen countless posts in the communities about people who have bought second-hand iPhones and iPads which have turned into expensive paper weights when the iOS is updated. Most of these were because the phone had been jail-broken or hacked in some way to give the appearance of being a genuine unlocked device. Some are really stolen devices where updating the iOS leads to activation problems with unknown ( to the buyer) user-ids actually "owning" the device.

How can a buyer make sure that they are not being ripped off ?

What are the signs that you can look for at the point of sale - before you hand over the money ?

Maybe something in the "Tips" section would be helpful to a lot of people.

Try to get the IMEI of the phone before hand -

Check here -

https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/

http://www.t-mobile.com/verifyIMEI.aspx

Those links will be a good guide as to whether the phone is

a. Locked to its current owner - if it is on the market for sale - it should not be

b. Blacklisted by the current carrier - for non payment of dues

The two are not the same - for example a person could unlock their phone for sale and yet owe their carrier which would lead to the phone being blacklisted

Final precaution - IF you want to buy a second hand phone - do it from a site that offers some buyer protection and restore right away when you get possession of the device

Again these are only guideposts - your best bet is to buy from Apple or an Authorized reseller

Good luck!
