Slow system, app cleanup

I have had a MacBook Air for a number of years now, now running the latest version of Yosemite. Some of the apps on my system have been uninstalled incorrectly over the years (my fault) and I am sure I also have a good amount of 'junk' laying around on my hard drive. I have learned, over the years, to use programs like App Cleaner to properly get rid of apps, but my system is running a little sluggishly lately, so I'm wondering if there is a good way of removing any remaining parts of long-deleted applications or finding pieces that can be safely removed.

Make sense?

Your assumption as to what's causing the problem may not be correct.

When you have a slowdown, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Thanks, OT. I ran Etrecheck and saw that I had some Adware, so I installed and ran AdwareMedic. It found and removed some adware, but there is still one showing up when I rerun Etrecheck. Interesting program, Etrecheck. Thanks for the recommendation.

Here are the latest results:

Your biggest issues is that you only have 2 GB of RAM and it can't be upgraded.

2 GB RAM Not upgradeable

Therefore you should limit the number of apps you have open at any time to prevent lack of memory causing apps to slow down.

You also have some malware, MacKeeper and TuneupMyMac, installed and some anti virus, Avast, installed.

TuneupMyMac UNKNOWN (missing value)

Read this user tip, Do not install MacKeeper. It has links to directions for removing it. As for Avast visit the developer's site to get uninstall directions. Both of those are bad for low RAM machines. Also Google for uninstall directions for TuneupMyMac.

If your Seagate external HD is format OS X Extended (journaled) and is used as a regular external hard drive you do not need the Seagate software that came with it.

Limit the number of User Login Items to only those that are absolutely necessary to have launched at boot time and running all the time.
