i am unable to open a spreadsheet in numbers.
the error message i get is "the document "?????" is invalid.

That error message the index.xml file is missing tells me that Numbers '09 is trying to open a Numbers 3 document.
See this User Tip about running the old (Numbers '09) and the new (Numbers 3) versions:

I have the same problem. I have Mavericks 10.9.5 with Numbers 3.2. I opened a Numbers doc from someone who has Yosemite [their spreadsheet would not open on my laptop] with Open With 3.2 (default) and now I can't open any of my Numbers documents without using the Open With feature.
Prior to this (yesterday) I was able to just click on the Numbers documents and they opened automatically. Is there a way to correct this?
