Q: Cannot inactivate a voice that reads most email notifications. How to inactivate it?

Every time an email arrives, a notifications appears at right top corner and a voice reads it aloud. I have inactivated Voice Over with CMD-F5 and have deselected all mail notifications from System Preferences, yet it continues. What to do?

MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

    Hello saisamurai,

If your Mac is reading your alerts for you and you don't want it to, check the Dictation & Speech System Preference for "Announce when alerts are displayed".

Hear your Mac speak alert messages

You can have your Mac speak the text in dialogs and alert messages and notify you when an app needs you to perform an action.

    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Dictation & Speech, then click Text to Speech.

    2. Select the “Announce when alerts are displayed” checkbox, then click Set Alert Options to set options:

      • Voice: Sets whether alerts are spoken by the system voice or a different voice.

      • Phrase: Sets the phrase you hear before the text of the alert message. By default, the name of the app associated with the alert message precedes the message.

      • Delay: Sets the number of seconds you want your Mac to wait before it speaks the alert message.

    3. Click OK.

To turn off this feature, deselect the “Announce when alerts are displayed” checkbox in Dictation & Speech preferences.
