I'm running the latest version of Yosemite 10.10.2 and I seem to be unable to use Airdrop. The checkbox doesn't appear in the Finder sidebar preferences and in System Preferences in the Extensions page, the Airdrop checkbox is greyed out and cannot be selected.
Any idea please?

I had the same problem on my macbook pro, OS 10.11.6 and found that after making sure that bluetooth is enabled, it worked. In the Finder, go to the 'Go' dropdown menu and select 'Airdrop' and you will see discoverable people and be able to change your preferences for visibility. It will also let you know that you should enable bluetooth if it is not currently on.
