Q: Black screen of death on iMac

Hello,

After attempting to wake-up my 2007 iMac from a nap the screen stayed dark. I can't tell whether my Mac was responding normally or not (screen issue taken aside of course). I shut it down with the power button, restarted, and since then always have had that dreadful grey curtain falling down. I tried several Safe Boots (my iMac then freezes a few minutes after the checks are performed), using the Mac OS X Install Disk, resetting the NVRAM/PRAM, removing the peripherals, etc.  Nothing works but at least I can still access my files by starting in target disk mode.

What's the most likely scenario here?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Your panic starts when the Intego product tries to load but I don't know if that's causing your problem or not. Just to be sure I would boot into Safe Mode and uninstall it

    com.intego.kext.AppBarrierKPI 2.2

    com.intego.kext.NetBarrierKPI 10.5.4

After that try a normal boot. If it still panics then boot into Safe Mode again, if it doesn't panic in Safe Mode then I'd suspect a failing GPU and would suggest taking it to an AASP for service. Considering it's age if it is a GPU it might not be worth fixing.

Thanks a lot for looking into this!

Actually none of the reboots in Safe Mode ever worked (after the checks are complete, the wheel freezes a few minutes into the restart), so I can't do any additional troubleshooting.

I would haul it to the nearest AASP for a diagnostic and estimate. Because of it's age I don't think the genius bar folks would even look at it.

I'm not even sure I'll haul it but thanks a lot again for your inputs and advice.

By the way, any idea of the design life of GPUs (in thousands of operating hours)?

Sorry, no idea. I'm not sure that silicone products like GPU's, CPU's or ram are even rated like that.
