Q: Disk0s4 After Yosemite installation

Hi Loner T

I have read the thread you provided and it seems i have seen it before also. To be honest, if there's a fix that's great, however id like to do it without having to re install windows as i don't have my CD image anymore, i hope you have come across cases where this is possible?

It does look like from the fixes at least that my data and the windows OS are there its just remapping them i mean the files and Windows 7 itself haven't just vanished!

Also i would need some step by step instructions with your direct intervention as i don't understand a lot of the stuff in the instructions you have been giving to people, i mean i an execute based on your instructions but i am not an expert in the Mac OS. Can i ask if you are based in the US just thinking about the time difference involved as we try to resolve this.

I am very relived to see that there is at least a fix for this stupid stupid bug, as far as i am concerned a partition means exactly that, and installing a Mac OS update would not affect a partition that has nothing to do with Mac OS.

Anyway, your help in the process is appreciated.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)

The large and nebulous world of Internet intervenes in our ability to collaborate so closely, but yet we can do that, if you are my eyes, ears and hands.

Start Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal.

For each of the following commands, triple click on each line and use Command+C (Copy) and Paste (Command+V) in the terminal window. Each command that begins with "sudo" requires your password. If these are done within a short window of, you may not be prompted for your password. The password prompt does not echo anything you type, so you press enter after the password. If you get an error message, the password had a typographical error.

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

For each command select the output text, use Command+C to copy and Command+V to paste into a reply window. Remove any personal information, as you see fit, before you post the reply. It can be in the same Reply or a sequence of replies, as you prefer. Here is an explanation for each command.

    1. Display the list of disks.

    2. Display the list of CoreStorage volumes (This is Apple's Logical Volume Manager).

    3. This shows the GUID partition map of the disk. GPT is one method of partitioning the disk.

    4. This shows the MBR partitioning map of the disk. MBR is a legacy method of partitioning disks used on older PCs.

If you need excruciating detail of steps 3 and 4, please see http://www.rodsbooks.com/gdisk/hybrid.html. Apple uses a Hybrid MBR (mapping GPT and MBR in sync) to allow Windows to run on a Mac.

    Hi Loner T

I will try my best to be your ears, eyes and hands!

I will post later to see if you are around as at the minute i am at work (its 4pm here in the UK) and obviously don't have the machine in front of me so lets hold it if you don't mind at step one until i have the machine.

I don't need excruciating detail at all as long as we can follow it and it will end up with my windows back working, i don't care as long as it makes it work again

    Cheers!

    Jamie

Its amazing to think you have to go through this to find the original problem, and that the problem creates such a huge problem for the user, but the problem is like 4 lines of code and some numbers being in the wrong order....

I am on the East Coast in USA, but I do have strange sleeping patterns.

If there are no complications, it should be fairly quick.

    Glad to hear!!

I was adamant when i talked to the apple live support that the partition wasn't just simply corrupted, they were adamant. I was like there must be a fix and if not what are you going to do about it cos at the end of the day its ******* off a lot of people and people could loose data they will never get back, what about the pics of my son on there etc

Every apple technician i have spoken to even after i pointed out that this problem is all over the net, including on their OWN support forums, claimed they had never come across the problem before.

    hhhhhmmmmm.........

The nice Apple Engineers do watch these, because I have emails from them. Support may or may not be aware, though.
