I have an airbook with yosemite, connected to a local area network using ethernet cable. I wish to back up onto a time capsule. can I connect the area network using ethernet cable to the time capsule and connect my airbook to Time capsule using wifi?

It can be tricky if the IP addresses happen to be the same.. Tell us more if you run into trouble.. and make sure in the list Ethernet has the higher precedence ie. is top of the list.. even then it will probably need manually set dns and gateway address for the TC connection to not mess up your main connection..
Why do you need to do it like this? Much better to have ethernet WAN connection to the TC and then TC to the MBA and have both internet and backups in the same connection... even if you must split them it is better to have wireless for the internet and ethernet to the TC.

This gives the setup of using the TC just for hard wired backups.
You can connect your capsule to your internet via ethernet cable. You can connect your laptop to your capsule wirelessly, or else use an ethernet plus thunderbolt adapter and connect "wired".
Thank you so much for your reply. Currently I connect to a university network via ethernet cable via thunderbolt on my mac. the mac is connected to time capsule for back up only. If I connect the internet to the TC as you suggest with ethernet cable and then i will be able to wirelessly connect to internet and TC for back up. When I connect mac to internet at present with ethernet cable, the network connection configures automatically or manually. if I connect TC to internet by cable, will the connection do the same? and if it has to be configured manually do i do this using network on system preferences on my mac ? best wishes
