Q: safari slow or never starts forcing a hard shut down

Safari is slow to start initially and sometimes (quite often) never starts and the rainbow spinning cursor just keeps on spinning until I am forced to hold the off button down and force a shutdown.  Safari usually starts (though slowly) thereafter.

I am running OS X Yosemite on a Macbook Mid 15" 2010.

I have looked at my DNS servers which are the same as for my Firefox browser and in the same order.  Firefox has no problem.

Thanks

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

    Hi pen261,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

The following article should help you sort out your issuse with Safari running slowly or not starting.

    Hi Jeffd55

I looked at my plugins and found an old Flip4Mac add-on. After I uninstalled it the problem seems to have improved considerably.

    Many thanks

I have no extensions - The extensions are all set to 'off' in the preferences tab. I've turned off my iCloud links and tried several fixes including Java and Flash cleanouts and updates (wasted time) however Safari is really really very slow and often becomes unresponsive.

Several posts suggest the simple fix is to dump Safari and use Chrome or Firefox.  I've found Chrome really quick.  I'd like Safari to work

Any suggestions advice on reinstalling Safari welcomed

    Thanks

If it is still not as fast as you would want it - do some housekeeping on top sites -- at least in Snow Leopard level - top sites are refreshed when Safari is started - and if any RSS feeds are in top site those are also updated.

In my case Safari was slowing way down and getting stuck until I removed all top sites -- found I had to check them every day as Safari was adding them on their own -- explained why some cookies kept showing up no matter how many times I removed them.
