i Use my iPhone for tethering. Why, at different stages of the day, does it show up to 3 devices 'connected' when I'm using only one? I keep changing my password to no avail. I did download a free wifi checker ap but deleted it weeks ago as I read on some reviews it somehow offers your password? Is this possible and if so how do I stop this happening? Thank you

I Don't think they're that easy to guess!! However I've just read about software that can break passwords so I'll try something really random and report back. The above article was really useful but assumes you know how to change all these settings and I don't think some of them apply to Apple products...

Are names of the devices that show connected yours or someone else's?

Perhaps you are not making a good strong password. Perhaps yours is too short, too simple, easy to guess. Just because you made a password doesn't necessarily mean its a good one. Do a Google search on how to make a strong password.
ok so far so good. ve changed the name of my device and made up a harder to hack password. Please can I ask how I see what devices are connected? I cannot figure out how to do this in settings, I can see other networks available NOT who's connected to me. Thanks

If you are concerned about others being on your personal hotspot via a wireless connection then make your connection over USB. Problem solved.
How many Mac's & iOS devices do you have, are they all in range? Do you use iCloud keychain?
iCloud keychain will save the WiFi password to other iOS & OS X devices, they will see the network as friendly & may join it.
That doesn't work. I've tried it. your hotspot still has to be switched on!
RRe other devices just my mac book. I don't use key chain. The above comment was about connecting with a Usb it doesn't work as hot spot still has to be switched on!
Find doesn't work on tethering only wifi. Ive been hijacked again. the stronger password worked for a bit.

Of course your personal hotspot has to be turned on. But with a wired usb connection there is no wifi connection between your phone and computer that can hacked. You are either not understanding what a personal hotspot is or not understanding how it works or both.
er thanks for your response?! I'm not stupid but I also am not a IT Specialist either. If you connect via USB you can still be detected as wifi from different devices. Otherwise my daughter wouldn't be able to connect her kindle whigh she can. So please explain what you think I don't get
Would connecting via Bluetooth be an option for you?
