Q: 1 mac, 2 users and 1 WD MyBook

I use got my new iMac and me and my wife is sharing it.. I am the admin and she is setup with a account that does not have admin rights..

 

we are using a USB WD Mybook for some files.. we both have folders me, her but I am trying to find a way that I can lock the folders so she can't read or write to my folder..

 

Can someone please help us? I tried everythign

iMac, iOS 8.1.3

    Hi Johnathan

     

    Sharing an external hard drive with someone and trying to have your own folders that does not have read or write permission might not be the most optimal solution. However, there are some settings that you could take a look at.

     

    First, when you open "Finder" and look under "Devices" you should see your external hard drive. If you right click this and choose "show info" you should get an option on the bottom called "ignore permissions on this hard drive". If this is on both you and your wife will have permission throughout the whole disk so make sure it is off.

     

    After that locate the folder(s) that you want restricted. Again right click and show "show info", on the bottom you will see permission and who has what type of permissions. Here you can set the read/write permissions that you want. Test to see if this solves your issue.
