Excel control-c does not work

I often switch back & forth between Mac & Windows computers. So I have changed my system preferences on my Mac to switch the Command & Control keys (i.e. switched them in System Preferences --> Keyboard --> Modifier Keys). Overall, everything works well doing this. When in email programs, browsers, Microsoft Word etc. control-c, control-a, control-z etc all work correctly. The only problem I have is in Microsoft Excel 2011, control-c does not copy the selected text to the clipboard. Edit-Copy and right-click-copy work correctly in Excel. Control-v, control-a, control-x, control-z all work correctly in Excel. So the only place I have seen a problem with this is with control-c in Excel. Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.
