Help! Early 2008 MacPro keeps crashing suddenly. EtreCheck help needed.

My MacPro 2008 keeps crashing, rebooting, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. This has happened before a couple of years ago, I think I reset PRAM then and it worked. This time, it hasn't. The things that have changed since my original configuration: I am now using Chrome as my primary browser, an old but huge Cinema Display and both a Magic Mouse and Wireless keyboard. Otherwise, not much has changed so I'm not sure what's going on.

I know it's an old system but I'm just trying to squeeze just a little more life out of it. It has been a solid machine for me for a long time and I need it for some upcoming jobs.

I ran an EtreCheckbut don't know how to interpret/take action from the results. Please advise! Thanks in advance.

you have remnants of macKeeper as well. It is malware you pay money for.

Kernel panic is not ONE problem, it is one of hundred to thousands of problems. This article can show you how to find a kernel panic report. Copy and paste the latest one in its entirety.

Where are these .plist files located? I've looked in all Preferences folders and can't find them. A spotlight search doesn't show Mackeeper or CleanMyMac files. I must've dumped the apps years ago adn these are some remnants.

As for a kernel panic report, I am in the console - do you need System Diagnostic Reports? I don't see the kernel logs.

As I write furiously before the next crash happens...

Use Safe Boot

Ideally keep old backups of your system - clone them, and have them available so if needed you can restore or go back or have a safe system to use.

I don't see that you uninstalled those two malware programs, and sometimes you have to reinstall in order to remove. Not everything can be manually removed by dragging to the trash, that does not work with mackeeper which is old, should be banned, and there have been banners alerting people to avoid (I even filter and block from my router)

Feb 24, 2015 9:49 AM in response to The hatter

Sorry it's taken awhile to respond. In short, I cleaned all the malware, plists and reinstalled my Adobe CS (the cache was acting strange consistently suddenly) but it did not solve my problems permanently. I was able to to finish my jobs by never putting the computer to sleep for a few days and getting the system stable enough. But if I put it to sleep, or shut it down to restart it would just shut down randomly and just keep trying to restart, sometimes successfully, sometimes not. A few times the fans came on violently, to which I would do a hard shut down by pressing the power button down. I did a CMS reset, and pram reset, pulled the power cord out for a battery reset...tried because other forums say it might be bad Ram or a logic board battery going bad.

It seems to be working for now, but I still dont' feel like it's solved. Here is the first page of the last kernel panic log (I haven't touched my computer for a few days):

A few times the fans came on violently, to which I would do a hard shut down by pressing the power button down

And that can cause problems of its own which you can try to minimize by doing a Disk Repair from Recovery or boot from another drive AND do a Safe Boot (sometimes twice) to clean up system caches.

Low space on boot drive - CS and its plugins can dump 100GB and up on boot drive.

When you have a clean install etc that is when to make a clone, a sparse disk image is fine as you can restore that later if needed.

You can't totally get rid of MacKeeper and others without usually the program's own install/uninstaller.

Not unless AppUninstaller or something has added the ability but I have no way of knowing.

Hence, a clean install to have a stable system.

you have to hit power button while unplugged and while all cables are unplugged to fully reset the SMC.

NVRAM also has to be done and from a cold start. Because some keyboards and mice have NVRAM and firmware they may need to be (temp for a week or two) left out and use a spare set ($25 for an excellent mouse and white MS keyboard is what I ended up with).

I would dump the 2600XT for sure. Get something that has 2GB VRAM and support for Yosemite.

It has 256MB VRAM which is not enough for Adobe, it has a weak small fan that does not do an adequate job cooling the GPU either.

Want to stop playing with an unstable system, look into flashing a PC GTX 680 or buy one from MacVidCards if not the EVGA Mac Edition

Also I would go back to Mavericks for now and wait for Yosemite to mature.

Too many background processes can spoil the soup like too much salt, and you have to assume that until you do a clean install of OS X you are on thin ice. Aim for lean mean to have stable and best performance with not one extra process than needed for your work.

Nothing on the boot drive except the OS and apps and mini user preferences library.

Now would be a great time to look into a 256-500GB SSD ($140-240 incl. sled adapter)

Air flow to bring down temps. When FBDIMMs warm up, and they should not get above 70*C so buy some new ones if these are, the fans stop during sleep mode and the FBDIMMs contnue to give off heat and don't cool - the high fans are in response to a thermal sensor or defective reading, incl from FBDIMMs so you need Hardware Monitor - it can track a temp over time and put a red alert on your screen that you manually set, ie FBDIMMs hit 72*C warning. And SMCFanControl to force the fans to stay above 1200 rpm (as example) when you are running stressful tasks.

Anyone have any thoughts about the Seagate stuff?

A negative shutdown cause code indicates an abnormal shutdown and may indicate a hardware fault. Only Apple knows the meaning of specific codes.

You don't need it and it can only cause problems. I doubt it's causing your specific complaint though. Same goes for MacKeeper and CleanMyMac. Don't use third party hacks to control the Mac Pro's fans either. Get rid of all of that junk. It can't help and will complicate troubleshooting.

This is my latest Etrecheck. I cleaned all the malware etc. that was recommended previously.

Also, my console is not showing a kernel panic, but there is a line that says this over and over:

Feb 24 09:12:47 YukiTriComputer coreduetd[41]: Core Data: error: -executeRequest: encountered exception = Fatal error. The database at /var/db/CoreDuet/coreduetd.db is corrupted. SQLite error code:11, 'database disk image is malformed' with userInfo = {

I could not find official information on this Apple private framework. However, it may have something to do with Handoff (to iOS devices). One user got relief by renaming each of the files in:

/var/db/coreduet

... another user simply deleted the files in that folder. In each case, they reported that the system recreated those files and the error messages ceased.

Help! Early 2008 MacPro keeps crashing suddenly. EtreCheck help needed.
