iCloud: Windows browser plug-ins, extensions, and add-ons

Some iCloud features used with Windows browsers require plug-ins, extensions, or add-ons. Learn more about what they do and how to install and update them.

iCloud Bookmarks add-on for Firefox

How to turn on bookmark updating and install the iCloud Bookmarks add-on

With iCloud Control Panel 3.0 or later, you can keep your bookmarks updated between Firefox for Windows and your other devices.

  1. Check the iCloud system requirements to make sure that your version of Firefox is supported by iCloud Control Panel.
  2. Quit Firefox if it's open, then download iCloud Control Panel and install it.
  3. Open the iCloud Control Panel and sign in:
    • Windows 8.1: Go to the Start screen, click the down arrow User uploaded file in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud app.
    • Windows 8: Go to the Start screen, then click the iCloud tile.
    • Windows 7: Choose Start menu > All Programs > iCloud > iCloud.
  4. Select Bookmarks, then click Options.
  5. Click Firefox, then click OK. Click Apply.
  6. You'll be asked to download the iCloud add-on for Firefox. Click Download.
  7. Firefox will open the Add-ons store page for the iCloud Bookmarks add-on. Click Download.
  8. Read the End User License Agreement, then click Accept and Install. Click Install Now.
  9. The Add-ons Manager should now show that the iCloud Bookmarks add-on is enabled. Your iCloud bookmarks will begin updating in Firefox.

Note: If you installed Firefox after installing iCloud Control Panel and you don't see the option to update your bookmarks with Firefox, close and reopen the iCloud Control Panel.

How to turn off bookmark updating

The recommended way to disable bookmark updating between Firefox and iCloud is to turn off Firefox updates in iCloud Control Panel:

  1. Open the iCloud Control Panel:
    • Windows 8.1: Go to the Start screen, click the down arrow User uploaded file in the lower-left corner, then click the iCloud app.
    • Windows 8: Go to the Start screen, then click the iCloud tile.
    • Windows 7: Choose Start menu > All Programs > iCloud > iCloud.
  2. If you're using only Firefox with iCloud Bookmarks, deselect the Bookmarks checkbox. If you're using multiple browsers with iCloud Bookmarks, click the Options button next to bookmarks, deselect the Firefox checkbox, then click OK.
  3. Click Apply.
  4. You'll be asked if you wish to remove the Firefox add-on. Click Remove. (If you click Cancel, iCloud Control Panel will continue updating your bookmarks with Firefox.)
  5. Firefox will open the Add-ons page:
    • Click Disable if you wish to temporarily stop updating your iCloud bookmarks with Firefox.
    • Click Remove if you wish to permanently stop updating your iCloud bookmarks with Firefox.

If you delete bookmarks while the iCloud Bookmarks add-on is disabled, be aware of the following if you later choose to enable the add-on again:

  • If you enable the add-on directly within Firefox, the bookmarks that you deleted are removed from all of your other devices that use iCloud Bookmarks.
  • If you enable the add-on using iCloud Control Panel, the bookmarks that you deleted aren't removed from your other devices, and the bookmarks on your other devices are added back to Firefox.

Note: Before you consider deleting bookmarks, learn how to archive or make copies of your iCloud data.

What to do if bookmarks aren't updating

If bookmarks don't appear to be updating between Firefox and your devices, confirm that the iCloud Bookmarks add-on is still enabled:

  1. Open Firefox.
  2. Choose Firefox > Add-ons.
  3. If the iCloud Bookmarks add-on is not enabled, click Enable to turn on bookmarks updating.

When a Firefox update is incompatible with the iCloud Bookmarks add-on, Firefox automatically disables the add-on. If you don't disable automatic updates, Firefox will later update and enable the add-on when an updated version from Apple is available from the Add-on store.

iCloud Web App Plugin for Internet Explorer

When you use Internet Explorer 9 to access iCloud.com, you may be asked to install the iCloud Web App Plugin:

User uploaded file

If you upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer, you don't need to install the plugin. With Internet Explorer 9, you will need to click Install to get the following iCloud.com features with Internet Explorer. If you don't install the plug-in, you can still use iCloud.com without these features.

  • Add or edit a contact photo
  • Add or edit your account's photo
  • Drag and drop to add attachments when composing an email message
  • Drag and drop to add attachments when creating a calendar event
  • Drag and drop to upload documents to the iWork for iCloud apps
  • Add images to your documents in iWork for iCloud
Note: Internet Explorer 9 does not support dragging more than one attachment at the same time (only one file is uploaded). Add attachments individually to email or calendar events or when uploading to iCloud.com with Internet Explorer 9. With Internet Explorer 10 or later, you can drag multiple attachments at the same time to email messages or calendar events. You can also upload multiple files at the same time to iWork for iCloud applications. You don't need to install a plug-in when using Firefox or Google Chrome, because all the functionality of iCloud.com is available with those browsers.

You can drag these file types to www.icloud.com/#pages:

  • Pages
  • Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx)
  • Text (.txt) files

You can drag these file types to www.icloud.com/#numbers:

  • Numbers
  • Microsoft Excel (.xls or .xlsx)
  • CSV (.csv) files
  • Text (.txt) files

You can drag these file types to www.icloud.com/#keynote:

  • Keynote
  • Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt or .pptx)

Hi Terry,

I'm sorry, I didn't catch that the resource I gave you doesn't work with XP. The only other thing I can think of is to "share" your most important bookmarks via email from your iPad. Depending on how many you have, it actually might be faster to have your bookmark list open on your iPad, and type the web address directly into Firefox on your PC to build the Bookmarks from scratch.
