Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply
ask a new question.
If you like, you can dictate instead of typing. Make sure Enable Dictation is turned on (in Settings > General > Keyboard) and iPhone is connected to the Internet.
Note: Dictation may not be available in all languages or in all areas, and features may vary. Cellular data charges may apply. See Cellular settings.
Dictate text. Tap in the onscreen keyboard, then speak. Tap Done when you finish.
Add text. Tap again and continue dictating. To insert text, tap to place the insertion point first. You can also replace selected text by dictating.
Add punctuation or format text. Say the punctuation or format. For example, “Dear Mary comma the check is in the mail exclamation mark” becomes “Dear Mary, the check is in the mail!” Punctuation and formatting commands include:
quote … end quote
new paragraph
new line
cap—to capitalize the next word
caps on … caps off—to capitalize the first character of each word
all caps—to make the next word all uppercase
all caps on … all caps off—to make the enclosed words all uppercase
no caps on … no caps off—to make the enclosed words all lowercase
no space on … no space off—to run a series of words together
You might find that Siri isn't available, that Siri isn't responding to your questions, or that Siri doesn't understand you. These steps can help.
Make sure that you're connected to the Internet
Siri works by sending your requests to Apple servers. Because of this, Siri sends information such as your voice input, contacts, and location (if you have Location Services turned on) to Apple to answer your requests.
For Siri to work, you need to be connected to the Internet using cellular data or Wi-Fi.
Sometimes, Siri might say, "Sorry, I'm having trouble connecting to the network" or ask that you "try again in a little while". If this happens, check your connection and try again later.
If you want to use Voice Control when you're not connected to the Internet, turn Siri off in Settings > General > Siri. To use Siri when you're connected to the Internet again, turn Siri back on.
Make sure that Siri is on
If Siri is off, you can turn it on in Settings > General > Siri. When you turn Siri on, make sure it's using a language available in your region.
If Siri isn't responding to your questions, try turning Siri off and then back on in Settings > General > Siri.
Give Siri information
Siri uses Contacts to learn about the people close to you. Learn how to allow or restrict Siri from learning about you and your contacts in the User Guide.
To set your contact information, tap Settings > General > Siri > My Info and select your contact.
If Siri is pronouncing a name incorrectly, you can say, "That's not how you say that." Siri will ask you how to say the first and last name.
Be as specific as possible
When you ask Siri to do something, be as specific as possible. For example, if you ask Siri to set an alarm, specify AM or PM.
If more than one of your contacts has the same first name, it can help to identify your contact by their full name when speaking with Siri.
Specify punctuation. For example. say "question mark."
Make sure that Siri can hear you clearly
If Siri can't understand what you're saying, follow these steps:
Make sure the microphones aren't blocked.
If you're using a case, try removing it.
Try turning your device off and then on again.
Use Siri with audio accessories
Siri will work with many audio accessories, including wired and wireless headsets and car stereos.
If you're using an audio device that connects using the Dock Connector, Siri won't route through that device. You'll need to use your device, wired headset, or Bluetooth headset to interact with Siri.
If you're using your iOS device with a device that uses a Remote User Interface, make sure that you interact with your iOS device using the car stereo or other device. If you try to use the touchscreen, Siri or Voice Control won't work.
Dictation tips
You can dictate with your iOS device in different languages by using the international keyboard for that language. To add a keyboard, tap Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard.
To change the language used for Dictation, follow these steps:
Tap the globe icon to change to the keyboard for that language.
Tap the microphone icon to start Dictation.
To use Dictation, the keyboard language needs to be a supported language. Dictation is designed to recognize the accents and dialects of these countries. Since every language has its own accents and dialects, the accuracy rate will be higher for native speakers.
Dictation works in most places where you can enter text using the keyboard. Certain text-entry fields in third-party apps or web forms might not support Dictation.
To turn Dictation on or off, follow these steps:
iOS 8.1 or later: go to Settings > General > Keyboards > Enable Dictation.
iOS 8.0 or earlier: go to Settings > General > Restrictions. Learn more about using Restrictions.
