HP Officejet 100 L411a printer setup

Using Macbook OSX 10.8.5. Trying to connect to new HP Officejet 100 L411. Installed correctly, but cannot print. Says "Printer not connected." All cables connected, test pages print, but no print from computer. Have tried to install Apple Software Update but can't because it says something else is being updated. HP is not much help; they like PC's better. I'd like to communicate with someone who can tell me what magic keys to press to make this new printer work.
