The macbook battery won't charge sporadically, i replaced the battery but now  fear it is the actual magnetic power interface to battery, I have tried different cords with simalr outcomes.  Suggestions?

Hi check out this link.  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203207 You could also try a SMC reset.  http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

None of those recs worked out, thanks though, the power has run  down now so low it won't turn on.  May try removing battery type reset of SMC.  Is it expensive to have the mag safe plug on the computer replaced?

Hi. Sorry none of that worked. If I understand correctly. Your battery has run down and the mag safe is not charging, so it will not turn on. When you have the mag safe plugged in, do you see a green light showing on it? Did you clean the plug on the Macbook Pro? You can use a cotton tip dampened with alcohol to do this. You have tried other mag safe's and get the same results, right? You could have a failed dc in board. That is what the mag safe plugs into. It in turn plugs into the logic board.I had to fix a similar  problem on a Ibook. It would run off the battery as long as charged, but not off the mag safe.

Yes, I think you've got the gist of it as i have tried several power cords, Oddly it will turn green and then turn off, it however every so often will charge, that is turn orange, and at least three times since this started has taken a full charge.  With the battery charged it will run fine.  This last cycle if you had it plugged in it woulod shut down but if you unhooked the power source it would run off the battery.   The battery is new.  Does this sound like the SMC?

Hi Yes the SMC acts as a monitor of the power supply It sets the value.. Sometimes doing a SMC reset fixes the problem. You could take it to the Apple store to look at. But if it happens to be charging when you do ,they probably  won't find anything. Next time this happens try wiggling the mag safe in the plug in a little bit and see if if happens to start charging. I fit does the connection it bad.You see I mentioned cleaning the port on the Macbook Pro just in case there is dirt, debris or oil on it.

Tried the wiggling, standing on head, holding it different angles unplugging power, etc. Tried cleaning mag safe plug and the internal power connection.  Will the smc reset work by unplugging battery-Power button technique if there is no charge on the battery?

Hi. With battery and power cord removed, you hold down the power button for 10 seconds to reset the SMC. With the power cord plugged in and the battery removed will the macbook start up?

There are some counterfeit MBP batteries circulating. If you bought it from an auction site, it's likely a counterfeit. Find System Profiler or System Information (the name depends on your OSX version which we don't know) in Applications > Utilities and run it. Select "Power" from the left hand pane and copy/paste what displays in the main pane. There are battery data there that might help sort this.
