Q: 76 gigs of "other" Yosemite

I just did a clean install of Yosemite on my macbook pro 500gig SSD and its showing that there are 76 gigs of "other" taking up hard drive space. Does the OS and built-in app really use that much space? Seems incredibly excessive and I really can't imagine this is the case.

   Re-index Macintosh HD.

   Spotlight reindexing will take a while to finish.

   System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy

Note:
If you don’t have Macintosh HD icon on the desktop,

Finder > Preferences > General > Show these items on the desktop:

Enable “Hard disks”.
