Keeping Finder Open

Is there a way to keep the Finder window open when browsing through it? Example, I open a folder in finder to clean it up. I open a specific file to see what it is, I than close the file but the finder is gone. So is there a way to keep the finder window open as you browse, open and close files so you don't have to continuously re-open the finder?

Thanks

I am running the latest 10.10.2. It is a brand new MacPro, about 6 weeks old. Just to clarify, I guess I want it to work like a PC. When I open a file inside a folder and than close it the folder remains open and visable so I can select another file. In finder when I open a file, than close it finder is still open but not in the forefront I need to select it from mission control to bring it to the forefront. Lots of extra steps to continue accessing files from a specific folder.

Incase you cannot tell I am new to the MAC so bear with me.

Hi I'm using Snow leopard. When I click on the finder and it opens. And even if I use the search box, anything I open to look at that opens another window I close by using the red dot upper left corner of window. If it does not open a new window I use the back arrow at the top left. If is a program with a close link in the file menu I close that way. Command quit or command w sounds good. I just never thought of doing it that way before. I use the red dot to close if the file opens in a new widow. If it only opens in the finder ,I use the back arrow.

Can you grab screenshots for each stage?

Close File

What you describe sounds like it should work how you would like, but perhaps we are missing something.

If you have lots of personal stuff on the Desktop create a new folder to hide it for now.

cmd+shift+3 will take a fullscreen image & save it to the Desktop, upload it via the camera icon.

cmd+shift+4 will take an image that has crosshairs for selection & save it to the Desktop. It may be less useful but we may see what is happening.

P.S It could help to see the Dock, incase Finder is crashing etc. Apple Menu > Dock > Turn hiding off will show the Dock if it is setup to minimise offscreen.

Hey Drew;

Before I do all that I now see that if the finder window is maximized it functions just as I stated, BUT if I minimize the finder window it does indeed remain just behind the open file and seems to function as I want. Does that make sense to you? I am not fully knowledgeable about how windows work on the MAC since I am new to it. I thought just as a PC the only function of the resize (green dot) was to make the window larger or smaller. Never thought it would function differently. Did I solve my own problem? Is this the way it should work?

Thanks for all the help. I did take the screen shots and that is when I noticed it functioning differently.
