i went to the Genius Bar and had my 2006 iMac wiped clean - the guy there told me I could still get all the system info I needed to resell, but when I turn the computer on, it's asking me to set up an account, which is rather not do. Is there a way to get system info without going through this process, or am I stuck? Thanks!
OK thanks. You can extract that information from system_profiler insingle user mode: restart your Mac while holding down the ⌘ and S keys at the same time until the screen stops at a text prompt.
For example,
operating system:
system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType
hardware information:
system_profiler SPHardwareDataType
memory:
system_profiler SPMemoryDataType
Commands are case-sensitive.
For all the other information you can extract with it,
system_profiler -help
To exit single user mode, type exit or just shut down the Mac.
Thanks for your response. I do understand that - my issue is that I do not know the specs for my system in order to resell it (OS version, RAM, storage space, etc)

If you had your Mac erased so that you can sell it, that is exactly the appropriate place to stop.
Don't set up any accounts. Just shut down the Mac. When the buyer plugs it in and turns it on, Setup Assistant will will lead him to configuring it correctly.
