Q: 2012 Macbook Pro mouse freeze

I have had an issue with my 2012 Macbook Pro running Yosemite  (10.10.2) freezing.  It does this about once every other day.

I've got the retina display w/ SSD.

Basically the mouse will stop moving and keyboard commands no longer work.  The screen no longer updates, and I will have to hard-down the power in order to get it back.

I look in the system.log and I found the spot where it comes back:

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost hidd[70]: HID Session async scheduling complete.

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost hidd[70]: Successfully opened the IOHIDSession

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost iconservicesd[38]: iconservicesd launched.

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost iconservicesd[38]: Cache path: /Library/Caches/com.apple.iconservices.store

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost kernel[0]: Previous shutdown cause: 3

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost kernel[0]: DSMOS has arrived

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost iconservicesagent[39]: Starting service with cache path: /var/folders/zz/zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n0000000000000/C/com.apple.iconservices

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost systemkeychain[95]: done file: /var/run/systemkeychaincheck.done

Feb  6 22:58:16 localhost apsd[51]: CGSLookupServerRootPort: Failed to look up the port for "com.apple.windowserver.active" (1102)

I believe that shutdown cause 3 is illegal instruction.

I find the spot where it went down a few lines earlier in the log:

I believe the error with the nsurlstoraged is a problem with a corrupted Safari cache, so I deleted it.  Seems to have made it go away.

I can't find anything about any of the other errors that might explain an entire system crash.  There were some strange kernel messages.

Feb 6 22:57:05 MyMBP kernel[0]: IO80211ScanManager::cachePurge: clearEntries[0] Firing!

Feb 6 22:57:05 MyMBP kernel[0]: IO80211ScanManager::cachePurge: Rescheduling in 3 seconds.

But I'm not sure what they mean.

There is nothing in the kernel.log file, and I ran the hardware test (short version) with no errors. I'll run the long version over night.

I also checked for 3rd party kernel extensions, and there were none (only apple ones).

Suggestions on what to do?

Mike

    Hi mpk2,

It seems you are experiencing freezing when using your mouse and keyboard. That does sound troublesome. I have located an article which provides some troubleshooting steps you may want to explore:

I don't have a keyboard mouse issue.  I have a computer freeze issue.

The entire thing locks up and then I have to hold down the power button to restart.

None of the symptoms in the document you forwarded apply.

I have been dealing with the same exact issue since upgrading to Yosemite. Just happened again a few minutes ago. The whole machine freezes up and will eventually shut itself down. Same console messages as you leading up to your reboot.

    The same issue!

Suddenly system absolutely freezes and reboots after 30-60 sec.

Same error messages prior to lockup.  Let me know if anyone has any ideas...

Same issue here with a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). The UI freezes then the machine reboots. This is the last error (repeated many times) before the system rebooted.

what happens if you disable airdrop?

    in terminal type

    sudo ifconfig awdl0 down

(you would need to do it everytime you start your macbook. Then you can create a script about it)

    thks.

I have been having this same problem on my 2012 Retina MBP.  The freezes began the day after I updated to 10.10.2.  I saved a copy of the system log after each freeze, and the messages below appear every time, right before the freeze.  I have disabled AirDrop.  We'll see if that makes any difference.

It has been over a week since I disabled AirDrop (via sudo ifconfig awdl0 down), and I have not had a single freeze since then.  The error messages shown above have not reappeared, either.  Before disabling AirDrop, I was getting two or three freezes per day.  Sure looks like AirDrop is the source of this problem.

Same issue here on a Late 2012 MacBook Pro 13 retina:

Machine freezes up, usually while surfing in Safari and then after about a minute of the frozen screen reboots.

Genius bar visit in this regard was unhelpful and pure arrogance. I'll give disabling AirDrop a try.

Checked if disabling AirDrop helped: Nope, froze and crashed just 30min later
