Apple TV no longer plays BBC radio. BBC pulls windows media player support.

This weekend BBC radio disappeared from Apple TV.

This is due to BBC stopping using Windows Media Player.

My Denon Internet radio has found alternate BBC format and works again.

I cannot get Apple tv to find other BBC streams.

Is there a solution?

I don't get why Apple & the BBC haven't got together to make an iPlayer channel/app for Apple TV, but you can find BBC stations within the Radio channel.

Slightly easier to check the catalogue in iTunes, but the following BBC stations are available in iTunes > Internet Radio or Apple TV > Radio

  • Adult Contemporary > BBC Radio 2
  • Alternative Rock > BBC Radio 6 Music
  • Classical > BBC Radio 3
  • Comedy > BBC Radio 4
  • International /World > BBC Asian Network
  • News / Talk Radio > BBC Radio 4 LW
  • News / Talk Radio > BBC Radio 5 live
  • Sports Radio > BBC Radio 5 live extra
  • Top 40 / Pop > BBC Radio 1
  • Top 40 / Pop > BBC Radio 1Xtra

Where is the BBC World Service? 😮😕

Having said that your mileage may vary depending upon where you are in the world and the regional settings of your device. I've run across several threads in the past where existing shortcuts to streams go down, so it may be a temporary issue. What stations are you trying to listen to?

FWIW I doubt that Apple TV or iTunes would be using the WMA streams so I don't think that announcement has any bearing in this case.

Something from the BBC.

This might explain more.

Thank you for contacting the BBC iPlayer support team.

We understand you have had problems listening to BBC Radio 2 on your Apple TV recently.

We're aware of reports that some users when attempting to listen to BBC Radio services on their Internet radio device are unable to access our live stations. Instead, they hear a message advising that the BBC no longer provides services in the Windows Media Audio format.

For most listeners, this is due to an issue with a third party provider who are working to resolve the problem, and you should try again later. Meanwhile, if possible, try listening on another device.

Some listeners may be affected due to the recent changes affecting our Windows Media Audio. You can find more information about these changes on the website below:
