It sounds like your MacBook Air's sleep settings may be affecting the keyboard illumination.
About Energy Saver sleep and idle modes in Mac OS X - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201714What happens when the Mac goes to sleep (not just into idle mode or display sleep)?
- Keyboard illumination, if a feature of your portable computer, turns off
The settings in Energy Saver preferences affect what happens when your Mac is left unattended for a period of time that you specify.
- Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu.
- Click the Energy Saver icon in the System Preferences window.
Computer Sleep
This setting is different from display sleep in that other parts of the computer also sleep. If you set the computer to never sleep using this slider, the display and other elements of the computer remain in a fully powered state.
Have a good day,
- Judy
