Battery drain on MBP Retina on Yosemite, even after new battery

I have a Mid 2012 MacbookPro Retina. About 4 months ago Apple replaced my battery as they decided it died too early in it's life. They also replaced my logic board as it had some problem.

Ever since I went to Yosemite, but battery has sucked. Replacing the battery did not help in the least.

I've run an EtreCheck and do not really understand how to diagnose it. There does seem to be a issue of some sort in the Problem System Launch Agents and Problem System Launch Daemons sections. Lots of "killed" processes.

Problem description:

Battery drain since Yosemite

You have several problems that , although likely self-inflicited, can be remedied at home. Your 8GB of RAM is normally fine but it is being stressed by unneeded third-party stuff.

1) CleanMyMac is a totally unneeded product that appears in far too many "slow Mac" reports here.

2) You have some components of Avast anti-virus/security. Also a known resource hog and performance killer. Avast may also inject adware although I don't see any in your report: Avast installs adware!

3) Google apps are know resource hogs. If you cannot stop using them, at minimum remove Chrome and Google Drive from your user Log-in items list so they don't launch everything you start the computer.

4) You have a lot of user log-in items, some of which I don't recognize:

User Login Items: ℹ️

iTunesHelper Application (/Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunesHelper.app)

gfxCardStatus Application (/Users/[redacted]/save download/gfxCardStatus.app)

ScanSnap Manager Application (/Applications/ScanSnap/ScanSnap Manager.app)

Google Drive Application (/Applications/Google Drive.app)

Battery Health Application (/Applications/Battery Health.app)

Dropbox Application (/Applications/Dropbox.app)

PowerboxInjector Application (/Applications/PowerboxInjector.app)

SpeechSynthesisServer Application (/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks /SpeechSynthesis.framework/Versions/A/SpeechSynthesisServer.app)

Hotspot Shield UNKNOWN (missing value)

Google Chrome UNKNOWN Hidden (missing value)

See how many can be removed. Removing them fro your log-in items does not remove them from the computer. It is easy enough to start most items when you need them instead of having them use resources all the time.

Feb 9, 2015 8:32 AM in response to Allan Jones

Thank you for the very prompt reply. I will lookup how to remove startup items and get to it, and several items of what you showed I no longer need. (The CleanmyMac and AVant were added after I saw how slow my MBP became after I upgraded to yosemite though; but I'll remove them). Google apps were installed prior to upgrading to Yosemite, by the way as well.

I wish I could stop using Google apps, but they are necessary, all the time. I wish I could stop using Chome and switch to Safari for the obvious memory benefits, but Safari will not let me run independent sessions (cookies just for that Window) and Chrome does, and I really need that. (And Safari is way harder on poor eyes like mine).

Prior to my reading your reply, updated my OS to the latest (was current already except with the most recent release a few days ago), I turned off Skype and Messages, and then did a PRAM and SMC reset. Then I ran EtreCheck again and it's much cleaner. It's posted below. After I clena up my startup items and remove a few apps I'll do it once more and post it here.

I've gone through the user login items and removed some. I had to retain Google Drive and Dropbox and I use them constantly. And the gfxCardStatus helps my battery by not letting the GPU switch to Discrete.

But I have a question on Start Up items. I read this:

Earlier versions of OS X relied on two folders—/Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems—to hold items designated to load when you start your Mac. Apple now discourages the use of startup items, but some programs (mostly older apps) still use this mechanism. Normally your /System/Library/StartupItems folder should be empty; but if it contains something that you don’t use anymore, you can drag the unwanted item to the Trash to prevent it from loading automatically the next time you start your Mac.

I see in my /Library/StartupItems and /System/Library/StartupItems folder, I have to folders, TAP and TUN. I just searched for what that might be:

http://tuntaposx.sourceforge.net/faq.xhtml

Do you think it is safe to remove these from that folder?

Feb 9, 2015 10:09 AM in response to slobizman

Well, a restart seems to have taken the pressure off the RAM for now. Cleans outy a bunch of temp files, log enteries and other stuff not need long-term. I restart my MBP with 8GB RAM once a week.

You still have CleanMyMac 2 installed. See this:

http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-2

It may not get all the components but I've used this method on a neighbor's computer and it seemed to have neutered CMM2 and stopped the slowness.

There is still the Avast Safari extension. Use Safari Preferences > Extensions to remove it.

You can continue to use Chrome and Google drive,--just get them out of the Log-in items sand launch them when you need them just like any other program. High-demand programs running the background will shorten battery runtime. Extra stuff running. Dropbox, which you also have, is a much less intrusive method for on-line backups.

You may also want to review this Apple article:

Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity - Apple Support

Under OS 10.9 and 10.10, you need to make a small change from teh instructions to make the all-important Step 3, letting Activity Monitor (AM) view all proceses, not just those you started. Now, to change the AM View option to show "All Processes," you use AM's "View" menu"

First of all, let me say thanks so much for you assistance. It's VERY helpful. I think we're almost there. Later today or in the morning I'll start at 100% and see how my battery runs.

@Alan:

Cleanmymac: I was unable to use their own uninstaller since it was just a trial and the uninstaller only works if it's a paid version. But I search for files with clenamymac in the names, found about 10, and trashed them.

TAP & TIN: trashed these from the startup folder.

AVAST: I went to Safari and deleted the extension. Then found a few files with the avast in them and trashed them.

User Login Items: I removed Google Drive from it. (it will probably start up up once I get working though as I use it throughout the day). Chrome wasn't in there, as I removed it the last time I was in there -- so it should be gone.

@Eric:

Thanks for the link to EasyFind. It helped me to find the extraneous files I needed to delete!

SO....here's the EtreCheck after doing all this and rebooting. By the way, it sure seemed like that the Reset of SMC an PRAM must have helped, as I ws already rebooting every few days. But I hadn't done those resets in a long time. Question: Is there any downside to doing these resets?

Well, not that all that is done, I wish it would have improved my battery life. Oh well. I know Chrome is a resource hog.

I would switch to Safari except for two reasons:

1. no tab pinning

2. no multiple user profiles, with session cookies, like Chrome has (this is most important)

Actually there's a #3, but I could live with it: the readability is considerably more poor. For exmaple trying to read the tabs with their lower contrast is very difficult for my eyes.

Just wanted to say that for me, the problem was due two two different things: the Awesome Screenshot plugin in chrome and GoToMeeting. AwesomeScreenshot was preventing sleep (as I discovered by typing "pmset -g assertions" in Terminal and looking at PreventingSystemSleep. GoToMeeting was somehow draining the battery, even when the laptop was closed. After getting rid of the plist file, my battery life jumped from around 5 hours to closer to 10.

Thank you Michael. No Awesome Screenshot. I did remove Gotomeeting and any residual files from the computer last week. Unfortunately it didn't help me. I ran your terminal command and didn't see anything under PreventSystemSleep. Here is my results:
