can't get max resolution for macbook air with ultra wide monitor

I purchased an LG 29UM55 ultra wide monitor but can't get max resolution with my macbook air - only 1920 x 1080. My built in monitor is higher. I am connecting with a HDMI cable. Should I connect with a display port?

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Try holding the "Option/Alt" key when clicking on the "Scaled" button. This should give you a larger list of screen resolutions. Not sure if it will give you what you want, but it is something to try:

After Option-Clicking on the "Scaled" button:

There are more screen resolution options now. What I do not know is whether it will give you an option for your specific display. I did this on my HDTV so its feedback via HDMI would not be the same as your LG 29UM55 ultra wide monitor.
