I downloaded the apple upgrade to try and view photos from an old external hard drive unsuccessfully. Now I am unable to access my current iPhoto on my desktop with an error stating it first needs to be prepared. I have done all recent upgrades.

If you're running Yosemite then you can't possible run iPhoto 8.1 as it is not compatible with Yosemite. Any iPhoto application older than 9.5.1 will look like this in Yosemite:

Do you have iPhoto 9.6 in your Applications folder? If so then do the following:

1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down to open the First Aid window. Be sure to follow the circled recommendation in the screenshot.

2 - run Option #4, Rebuild Database.
