Mail password problem

I am unable to send email from my Mail account on my iMac.When I send emails to my iMac from my Mac Air, it works fine. Apparently, my Mail password on my iMac is no longer working, so I changed the password under Preferences, email password, clicked Save. Now, when I try and send emails from my iMac, the email authentication box pops up, I enter the new password, but it is refused, and the box prompts me once more for the password. Please advise solution? Thank you. Mail Version 4.6 (1085) System Version: Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
