Trash Wont delete locked items.

I have an application in the trash that is locked and I am unable to delete it. Ive tried using single user mode and terminal to erase it using the command rm -rf ~/.Trash/* but that has not worked. The app has all the package contents removed and is 0KB but I am unable to remove it.

Thanks

I have a MacBook Pro with Retina 13" on OS X 10.10.3 (It also wouldn't erase on other previous software version)

If the file was created by Windows in your Parallels environment, you may be required to delete it from Windows.

You have an anti-virus package. It is possible that is interfering.

You DO NOT need any Anti-Malware packages, no Mac cleaners, not memory cleaners on a Mac. They frequently get in the way, and sometimes those that have a kernel extension panic the system, especially after an OS upgrade where the undocumented interface used by the kernel extension find the world has changed and they did not keep up.

How does Mac OS X protect me?

Yeah it was not created from windows (BootCamp Partition or VM) I know how I don't need antivirus or anything because of GateKeeper being integrated on mac. I still just prefer to have it because my parents or brother use my laptop and sometimes manage to get adware on it. Also Ive tried deleting it and it still wouldn't let me delete Crashplan from the trash.

Mar 5, 2015 4:52 PM in response to tbraun1551

I forget, did you uninstall CrashPlan?

Or this!!!

Fortunately before getting that far, I was able to fix it by removing the "system immutable flag" via Terminal.app, using the "chflags noschg" command.

In the terminal:

cd ~/.Trash/

chflags -R noschg *

rm -fR * # or empty via Finder

This worked for me, but I had to run it as a sudo command: sudo chflags -R noschg * – alexroper Jan 23 at 23:23

Well here is what happened.

1. I backed up my computer via crashplan

2. I then erased my computer completely

3. Reinstalled crash plan from internet and used that to redownload all my files.

4. I noticed that it sank the whole applications folder to my computer and I did not want that so I deleted that folder and it had the old crash plan app in it and now all the others deleted but crash plan won't.

Dec 30, 2015 11:09 PM in response to tbraun1551

Dear all,

I spent hours reading all the forums and trying all the solutions without success. I was simply trying to delete a folder which was said to be "in use".

Amongst some of the commonly tried solutions I tried the following:

Restart the computer: Nothing changed.

Dragging the folder to new locations and adding files to it: Still can't delete.

Dragging it to the trash: It won't go there

Renaming, Dragging another folder on top of it, copying another folder on top and "replace" etc: Still cant delete

Running the terminal command: lsof | grep folder name : "No such file or directory"

Here are two articles which may help:

You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash - Apple Support

http://www.cnet.com/news/mini-tutorial-force-deleting-stubborn-or-problematic-fi les-in-mac-os-x/

What worked for me

I discovered that the file I was trying to delete was in my Boxcryptor folder which contained the Dropbox folder.

By exiting the Boxcryptor folder and going to the Dropbox folder (the normal one, not the one in "BoxCryptor"), I found I could delete the offending folder in this way.

Why does this happen:

Things stop working when a file or folder name contains a blank space (a whitespace) at the end of the file or folder name. I use GetBackUp Pro to copy files into the Dropbox folder inside BoxCryptor. The files get locked with a "file in use" flag which makes it impossible to delete the file.

Boxcryptor, Dropbox, or GetBackUp Pro, or possibly another program does not like any files of folders with a whitespace after the file name. When the file is copied into the the Dropbox folder inside BoxCryptor by GetBackupPro more than once, a new file or folder is created with the extra text "white space conflict". The old file/folder then becomes "locked" or rather "in use", and can't be deleted inside BoxCryptor no matter what you try.

Trash Wont delete locked items.
