Q: Missing thumbnails in shared photostreams

On an iMac running latest Mavericks, this is the home of my photo library and this is where I create shared photostreams. When I go into those shared photostreams, most of the thumbnails are missing. Only the ones from after December 23 appear; that coincides with when I installed Yosemite and then reverted to Mavericks using a fresh Time Machine backup. I can double-click the empty box and get the image, and I can right-click and select "find in library" so it certainly knows what image is supposed to be there and actually has it.

None of the options in the repair menu (repair thumbnails, etc.) have had any effect whatsoever. The images all show on our devices so it seems the cloud part is OK; the problem appears to be just within the Mac.

I'm pretty sure I could just recreate them all but that is a PITA in several ways, both for me to figure out which ones they are and also for the subscribers to get a whole new version of the same album(s). Clearly this is broken somehow. Any idea how I can fix it?

Are others getting missing thumbnails when viewing the shared photo streams?

I assume not, but I can check. Our own devices all show the thumbnails properly so I assume others' do also. Viewing the photostream on icloud.com works properly, also.

BTW this also affects photostreams shared by others. For instance our neighbor shared a stream of 25 photos and they all show up on my phone but the thumbnails don't show on the iMac. The images show when I click through to them, and they scrub immediately so the images are local, but the filmstrip at the bottom shows empty squares.

Looking at a different photostream shared by our neighbors...  the panorama shots are the only ones that display in thumbnails, but they do not show up in the filmstrip at the bottom (all are blank while scrubbing). Maybe for the right person that is a clue? All show properly on my phone.

    Try the following:

Disable Photo Stream in the System/iCloud preference pane

    Preview002.png

and Photo Sharing in iPhoto's iCloud preference pane.

Reboot and reenable both respectively. See if that will jump start Photo Sharing and Shared Photo Streams..

Thanks, but I assumed (I could be wrong) that turning off shared photo streams will end the photostreams I'm sharing on everyone's devices. If that's not the case, then how would I delete those photostreams afterward if I wanted to, with sharing already turned off?

I guess the question boils down to, do those photostreams live on even if I shut down photo sharing on the Mac that created them? If so, what controls them?

Just trying to understand this a bit better. Thanks for staying with me.

    See this link:

iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ - Apple Support

You can toggle iCloud Photo Sharing on and off. The streams will stay in iCloud. It will only be deleted from iCloud, if you delete the stream on the device that created it. To be able to delete the stream, enable photo sharing again and the delete the shared album.

Thanks for the confirmation. I'll give that a shot this evening.

    Worked perfectly, thanks.

Of course I think it's kind of dumb to have to re-download a half gigabyte of pictures just to make thumbnails of pictures that were there the whole time...
